Holden's mom takes him to a shop, Yentl's Judaic Treasures, which appears a bit run down.
The proprietor, Yentl, offers yarmulkes that take Holden on a crash course of Jewish history each time he tries one on.
Holden, already jittery because he has such a huge day coming up, finds himself in this strange, old store and once he puts on a yarmulke, or kippa, finds himself transported through history, starting with Noah's Ark.
"Could this be real? No, I must be dreaming, but my dreams don't usually have smell-a-vision."
The next kippa takes him to Egypt as Moses talks about leading the Jewish slaves out of Egypt and to the promised land.
Once that yarmulke is removed, Holden returns to the present.
"Mom would take me to the psycho ward if she knew I was having visions."

"You don't know the half of it, I thought."
Next stop is squaring off against Antiochus IV's soldiers, and Holden has a clear head -- all things considered.
Another kippa takes him to a concentration camp where he meets a Jewish boy, behind barbed wire.
In the best section of the book, the prisoner says to Holden:
"I don't know if you're real, but in case you are, please don't pity me. I have suffered much, but am still proud to be a Jew. Don't let what we have suffered here go unnoticed."
Finally, Holden winds up at the wall, and asks God's guidance to do well when he becomes a Bar Mitzvah.
