With this swerve, The Witch From Mercury quietly backgrounds the heavy themes that Gundam and other giant robot shows in its likeness are known for in exchange for a military school drama about the timid Suletta Mercury, the friendly girl from Mercury with an extraordinarily advanced mobile suit that ties her to one of the greatest human conflicts in the solar system.

‘Gundam: The Witch From Mercury’ Is Finally Getting Interesting

The end card from the fourteenth episode as penned by lack.

Following the rather disjointed start to the second season of Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, the latest episode has finally covered some interesting narrative ground.

The fourteenth episode directly follows on from the events shown at the end of the second season opener; with Lady Prospera trying to recruit Miorine into continuing her father’s (and mother’s!) work on “Quiet Zero”.

We again see the mysterious hardware that is likely the location of Quiet Zero and the place that seemingly houses these “dense data storms”, which are also the curse of the Gundams and what kills their human pilots.

It’s here where things start to get interesting and how this Gundam series is deviating from previous works and forging its own narrative path.

This plot setup then feeds directly into a mobile suit battle royale, with multiple houses all vying to take down the Aerial and Suletta.

However, Sophie and Norea turn up in their Gundams and actually start killing people, which is obviously shocking after all the previously risk-free duels between students.

While Sophie and Norea want their own duel with Suletta, it’s Sophie that goes all out and reveals new Gund-Bits in the form of actual mobile suits.

As an aside, seeing the Gundvolvas here really reminded me of the GX-Bits in Gundam X, but that’s just me being a massive nerd.

Naturally, Sophie goes full out and tries to kill Suletta, but it’s here we see the return of the blue coloring for the Permet elements in the Aerial. Except that this time, we now finally know what and more importantly who has been controlling the Aerial all along.

SPOILER ALERT

Many thought that Suletta was actually Ericht from the prologue episode under a new name. After all, her mother Elnora changed her name to Lady Prospera. However, that is now very much not the case.

In the novel Cradle Planet, we find out that the Aerial has a voice of its own and that it talks to Suletta. In the anime we see this as a one sided conversation, with Suletta responding to something that the Aerial is saying.

Except, it isn’t the Aerial talking, it’s actually Ericht’s consciousness inside the mobile suit and Suletta is the second daughter of Lady Prospera.

This is why the Aerial can control all those Gund-Bits so effectively and why the Permet setup doesn’t just straight up kill Suletta. In short, it’s her older sister doing all the heavy lifting throughout.

To be honest, some of us had guessed that the Aerial may have absorbed Ericht in some way, but this episode openly confirms that and I am pretty sure that something similar happened to Miorine’s mother and that Quiet Zero is where her mother’s consciousness now resides.

All of this takes us into new and fascinating territory for Gundam. Normally, we have some kind of allegory of Newtypes from the original Mobile Suit Gundam pop-up at some point, but this is all new and actually exciting.

Some of this may sound similar to events in Neon Genesis Evangelion, as Shinji’s mother is absorbed into Eva-01. However, that’s more of a primal setup, as Shinji can’t communicate with his mother. In this instance it’s clear that Ericht is conscious and actively talking to her sister.

In any case, the pace of the episodes are such that the previous high-school drama is being supplanted by the actual story now and that is great. Not that I didn’t enjoy the high-school hijinks, but Gundam is always meant to be a lot more than that and Witch from Mercury is finally living up to its forebears.

Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is currently available to watch via Crunchyroll.

I was extremely disappointed with this "Squishy frog wearing an adorable witch hat squishmallow". The quality was subpar, and it felt like cheaply made material. The stitching was already fraying when I received it, and it didn't hold up well after just a few days of use. Additionally, the picture online made it look much cuter than it actually is. The colors were dull and not as vibrant as advertised. Overall, I expected better for the price I paid, and I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone.

While the idea of a squishmallow wearing a witch hat seemed cute at first, the execution fell short for me. The texture of the squishy frog was not enjoyable to touch, it had a strange sticky feel to it that made it less satisfying to squish. The stuffing also seemed unevenly distributed, making it lumpy and uncomfortable to hold. The witch hat itself was poorly attached and kept falling off, which was frustrating. Overall, I wouldn't purchase another squishmallow like this one.

I was initially excited to add the "Squishy frog wearing an adorable witch hat squishmallow" to my collection, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The size of the squishmallow was much smaller than anticipated, which made it feel overpriced. The material was also not as soft and squishy as I had hoped for. Additionally, the hat didn't fit properly on the frog's head, and it kept sliding off or looking lopsided. While it's still a cute addition to my collection, I wouldn't purchase it again due to these issues.
