Once upon a time, there was a kid’s TV show named “Mister Magic”. A magical show, where a group of kids gathered together and imagined a world all their own. Along the way, they’d learn life lessons from a mysterious caped figure. A seemingly innocuous show, and one that ran for decades until a sudden tragedy caused its cancellation. Yet, there are no records of its existence. No recordings, no listings of cast or crew. Just half-remembered recollections of a show that broadcast on the airspace between channels. Not even the surviving cast members, who’ve been brought together for some kind of reunion special, can remember the specifics of their childhood spent on this show. But the deeper they dig into their pasts, the more unsettling their memories become. And the more they realize that Mister Magic is just itching to make a comeback.

The kind of horror that plays with your memory that swirl of half-remembered dreams, long-forgotten childhood experiences, and trauma best left shut away in the deepest of closets. Not even the surviving cast members, who ve been brought together for some kind of reunion special, can remember the specifics of their childhood spent on this show.

QUICKIE REVIEW: “Mister Magic” by Kiersten White

The fewer specifics you know about Kiersten White’s Mister Magic, the better. It’s the kind of book you’ll want to know as little about going in as possible. All the better to let its weirdness, horror, and emotions wash over you. Put simply, Mister Magic is a perfect read for Creepypasta fans. The kind of horror that plays with your memory – that swirl of half-remembered dreams, long-forgotten childhood experiences, and trauma best left shut away in the deepest of closets. It’s a fast-paced, haunting look at the ways childhood trauma shapes a person – and how difficult it can be to break free from that trauma.

But the deeper they dig into their pasts, the more unsettling their memories become. And the more they realize that Mister Magic is just itching to make a comeback.

If you’re at all familiar with Creepypasta stories, you’re gonna feel right at home with Mister Magic. In particular, it has big Candle Cove vibes – the story that served as the source material for the first season of SyFy’s Channel Zero. There’s a mysterious show that’s half-remembered by those who saw it, and underneath that seemingly wholesome piece of children’s television lies this dark underbelly. Mister Magic thrives in that sense of mystique. Whose memories can you trust? What is Mister Magic’s purpose? What really happened that caused the show’s cancelation? And why can’t anyone remember anything specific about the show? It’s a great mystery. One that’s well-told, quick-paced, and perfectly straddles that line between surprising and meticulously planned.

But, in truth, Mister Magic is the kind of book where the specifics don’t entirely matter. In fact, I’d say the book is at its worst when it tries to overexplain itself. The more answers White provides, the more confusing the book gets. And that sense of confusion occasionally distracts from just how well-realized the book’s emotional core is.

For at its heart, Mister Magic isn’t some creepy story about a strange, unsettling children’s television show that nobody can remember. It’s a story about a group of damaged people unraveling the mysteries of their past and trying, however desperately, to find a way to rebuild the pieces of their shattered lives into something that gives them the chance to be the best selves they can be. It’s a story about survival, about bravery in the face of certain doom, and about the strength of friendship. The power to overcome even the darkest of tragedies.

Mister Magic is one of those deeply impactful books that stick with you long after you finish the final chapter. It’s haunting in all of the best ways, psychologically horrific, and emotionally devastating. But at its heart, there’s also this sense of hope. A hope that the wrongs of the past can be righted, a hope that we can make the world a better place for future generations, and a hope that there’s always the possibility of a happy ending – no matter what. It’s a powerful story to tell, and one that White tells incredibly well. It’s heartbreaking in its emotional truth but somehow manages to feel uplifting in that heartbreak.

Ultimately, Mister Magic is as surreal a read as it is a thrilling one. On the one hand, it’s a thrilling, captivating mystery. And on the other hand, it’s a deeply emotional journey of self-discovery and healing. All wrapped together in a blanket of surreal, analog horror. It’s a perfect example of how versatile this genre can be. It’s familiar, yet wholly unique. Unsettling, yet comforting. Horrific, yet hopeful. It’s a book full of contradictions. A story that’s deeply engrossing, slightly confusing, and emotionally fulfilling. Put simply, Mister Magic is well worth a read if you’re into these kinds of surreal, abstract horror tapestries. Or if you’re a sucker for a good trauma exploration.

4 out of 5 wands.

Mister Magic is available now in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook formats from Penguin Random House / Del Rey.

But with no surviving video of the show, no evidence of who directed or produced it, and no records of who—or what—the beloved host actually was, memories are all the former Circle of Friends has.
