Elisabeth Alba

Elisabeth Alba is an illustrator of fantasy art, children's books, and maps. She is married to artist Scott Murphy and they live in Western Massachusetts, USA, with their border collie mix, Rayo. These designs are based on art from the Everyday Witch Tarot, illustrated by Elisabeth Alba, written by Deborah and published by Llewellyn Worldwide.

How long have you been illustrating and what made you start?
I have been professionally illustrating since 2007. I have always been an artist, helping to design classroom decorations as early as grade school and creating my own little stories and comics. My parents were always encouraging. They believed I could make art a career and never forced me to choose something more traditional and stable. I love to read as well, so in college I studied Art and English. At some point I had to make the decision whether I wanted to continue to study English and make academia a career, or to make art. Because illustration is a wonderful mix of art and writing and illustrating narratives, I chose to focus on illustration. I have illustrated for various clients in wildly different genres and love giving their visions life.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I’m inspired by so many things. Books I read, movies I watch, and especially travel and history. I love fairy tales, mythology, everything mysterious and enchanting, beautiful architecture and historical costume, and nature and landscapes I have seen in my travels.

Where is your favourite place to illustrate?
I work from home back to back with my husband who is also an illustrator. Some people need a separate studio space outside their home, but I love being home with the best company! It’s also nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of too. Sometimes it’s fun to pack up all of my art supplies and work elsewhere, like at artist retreats, as long as there is water for my brushes and a table to work on.

What are your illustrating/colouring material essentials?
I’m primarily a painter, and prefer water-soluble materials. My go-to essentials are waterproof ink (my favourite is Dr Ph Martin’s Black Star matte), watercolour (I use Dr Ph Martin’s Hydrus liquid watercolours), and Holbein Acryla Gouache when I want to work more opaquely. Sometimes I use coloured pencils too.

What’s the piece of work that you’re most proud of or enjoyed doing the most?
This is a tough question! I am proud of every piece of art and project that I finish for different reasons. The Everyday Witch Tarot is definitely something I am proud of because it was such a huge endeavour. 79 paintings within a year and a half is no joke. But the subject matter was so much fun that I’m doing it again illustrating the companion oracle deck with author Deborah Blake!

Artist's tip

Take a picture outside your window at various times of day and in various weather, and see how the colours change. At night everything looks cooler and more blue. During a sunset, everything looks warm and with pink highlights. When it’s raining, everything is grey and green. Study the differences. When you colour an image you can imagine what time of day it is and what kinds of colours you see at that time. I love telling stories with art, and changing the colours based on time of day or weather adds another layer of story!

Description
The tilean blood of Victoria is clearly seen on her tanned skin and her thick, curly black hair, but the gaunt, stern face of her father can be seen in her straight nose and cheekbones, but above all else in the mounting collection of small scars she seems to be collecting after each fight. Barely reaching six foot high, she nonetheless manages to have an imposing presence thanks to her intense stare and her calm, clear voice.
Height: Barely 5 feet tall.
Weight: 54 kg
Hair: Black with thick curls.
Eyes: Dark Brown.
Skin: Dark, mediterranean and covered with moles.
Quirks: She tends to bit her lips a lot, as well as to utter her thougts to herself, which can make her look less than stable.

Background
Heresy and corruption must be rooted out. Cut just the branches and it will grow again, stronger and more twisted. It is a simple concept, but one which lead Witch Hunter Heinrich Alba to leave the imperium in pursue of the the fleeing cultist he had spent a good part of his life hunting. Despite the orders of his superiors, a simple frontier will not stop his hunt. They cultist would return, in due time, and his job was to stop that. His hunt lead him all the way south, to Tilea. The divided city-states that dotted the land were not the Empire, the corruption had taken hold and the old Witch Hunter found himself seeing his nemesis behind every shadow, and in a land where everything is for sale, his uncompromising faith bought him few friends.

In the end, a life of struggle and failures made him bitter, wishing for the life of a common man instead of the burden sigmar had placed upon his shoulder. The fires of his soul had been extinguished. For his daughter, Victoria, the old witch hunter had been a quiet foreigner, who had married her mother out of love, someone content with the simple life of a woodcutter, out in the forest, away from civilization. She knew of his father as a calm, almost timid man, who enjoyed the simple things in life, ignoring the stern reputation he had built back on the Empire, where his name was associated with the smell of burning flesh.

The truth arise when one fateful day the cultist tracked their old enemy and put an end to his life. When Victoria returned home from the nearby city she was forced to patch the truth from ash, the burned remains of his father's diary and Sigmar's holy book, the thing his father had died holding on to. Now she is doing the same travel her father did, but in the opposite direction, a quest to find herself, to get revenge and to learn the truth of her origins, with nothing but her father's old sword and hat, and a newly discovered faith.

Reviews for "The Migration Spirit: Witnessing the Epic Journey of New York's Magic Flite"

1. Lisa - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the Magic Flite show in New York. The tricks were so predictable and the whole performance lacked excitement and creativity. I've seen much better magic shows before and this one just didn't live up to my expectations. Even the audience participation segments felt forced and unengaging. Overall, I would not recommend this show to anyone looking for a thrilling and mind-blowing magical experience.
2. Ethan - 1 star - Magic Flite in New York was a complete waste of time and money. The magician seemed disinterested and bored throughout the entire performance, which affected the overall energy and entertainment value of the show. The tricks were simple and poorly executed, leaving me unimpressed. There was no wow factor or sense of wonder that you would expect from a magic show. I would suggest looking for alternative magical performances in New York to truly get the magic experience you desire.
3. Sarah - 2 stars - As a fan of magic shows, I had high hopes for Magic Flite in New York, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me. The magician seemed more interested in flashy and unnecessary props rather than focusing on building a strong connection with the audience. The tricks were unoriginal and lacked any real surprise or amazement. It felt like I've seen them all before. The pacing of the show was also off, with awkward transitions and unnecessary filler moments. Overall, I was left unimpressed and would not recommend attending this magic show.
