I just signed for a new pool. I love the looks of the colored magic stream laminars. Our pool is getting the DE filter. I noticed the laminars say to not use sand or DE filters. So is my only choice at this point is to change the main filter to a cartridge filter during construction or keep the DE as the main filter and then buy a small cartridge filter and run off that?

Thank you for the links but it doesn't really tell me why no DE filter. From Pentair's own website shows the DE filters down to five microns and the cartridge goes down to 20 microns. So what makes the DE not compatible?

I hear you. Seems odd right? But the following link's installation manual also says the same thing: https://srsmith.com/media/176437/79-15152-00-rev-e2-914.pdf.

The water supply to the Color Light Streams Laminar fountains must be filtered with a cartridge filter. Sand filter and DE filters will likely produce small particles of debris that will clog the filter screens internal to the laminar flow fountains.

Perhaps because with even the best DE or sand filtration system, there is always a chance of a torn grid or busted manifold. Backwashing may be an issue as well if residual DE or sand travel past the filter. Things that while not horrible if they make it to the pool could be detrimental to that lighting.
