The Witch

This film is a masterpiece but it’s clearly meant for adults. The story is rich and complex and dwells with religion and folklore. It’s a very symbolic piece about womanhood and not for everyone: it also requires some intellectual baggage to fully understand it. The characters also speak Old English to create a more realist atmosphere. Young teenagers won’t understand what it’s about.

Dark

Violence 5/10. A lot of violence is implied but very dark. A girl kills her mother by stabbing her in the head, blood oozes out. A boy has a whole apple pulled out of his mouth. Lots of disturbing imagery and implications. Sex 4/10. Brief nudity of dancing witches. A girl undresses but is only seen nude from behind or from far away.

Dark, creepy horror for teens and up

The Witch is a moody, unsettling drama / horror film that builds suspense with its cinematographic mastery of tone and its abundance of creepy, unnerving imagery and themes. It features brief female full frontal nudity (in a non-sexual context) and partially depicts acts of violence--an abduction and the drawing of a knife insinuates malicious happenstances. An exorcism. Gruesome deaths. Regardless of anything else, it's undeniable that The Witch is bleak and tentative, setting horrific events in line with expert care and intent. It's disturbing and unforgettable, but alright for mature horror-loving teens.

BluRay Review (Australia)

I just watched this BluRay last night after purchasing it with a $250 JB Hi Fi gift card I got for Christmas and all I can say is wow. The trailer looked intriguing and so I thought I'd give the movie a watch, I did not regret doing so. "The Witch" is set in the 17th century New-England about a family who leave their village settlement in order to be away from fake religious martyrs but soon after moving into their new home things start happening, people start dying and the family starts tearing itself apart trying to figure out who is the witch, before time runs out for them all. It's a really unsettling film that get extremely intense in the last 30 minutes. Some people may find this film to be a slow burn but it's not a bad film, it's a drama with horror in it. It's not a full-on blood and guts marathon of Lionsgate proportions, it suffers the same genre mishap as the 2015 gothic romance/horror movie, "Crimson Peak". This film is just so brilliant yet it doesn't get the attention it deserves despite getting mostly positive critical praise and praise from horror fans. The acting in this film is superb for a horror film with standout performance's by Ralp Ineson and Kate Dickie. The script was just as great as the acting, with historically and religiously accurate wording, phrases and conversations. The cinematography was off the chart and is the best cinematography I have ever seen in a horror film and is actually OSCAR worthy. It really capture the essence of how deserted they really are and how empty the world was back in the 17th century. The pacing for some will be too slow to bare but if you go to watch this film with the fact it's more of a drama than a horror movie you'd easily be able to watch it and enjoy it. It starts off slow and slowly creeps up for an intense final 30 minutes. The video quality is as per usual a 1080p HD transfer and was great for the most part despite being a visually bleak film with lots of use of greys, blacks, browns and whites. The film is presented in a 1.66:1 aspect ration with desaturated colours to give that retro feel which really adds to the ambience and atmosphere of this film. It's sharp enough that single strains of hairs are visible, facial features are clearly seen, every hair on the goat's body and every rough patch over the goats horns are clearly seen. I believe the fact that they used a different camera from most Hollywood productions adds the video quality that we received. The sound quality was absolutely superb and oh my god the beauty of it is unbelievable. It's a 5.1 DTS-HD audiotrack that was so impressive it could have fooled me into believing it was 7.1 DTS-HD audiotrack. The bass was fantastic and deep, the music is loud and beautiful, while talking and environmental sounds are kept at an appropriate level that is still easy to hear. The only thing that the we seem to be lacking on an otherwise great BluRay is bonus features. That's right there is a total of zero bonus features on this disc which really sucks because I would have loved to watch some behind the scenes featurettes and deleted scenes. We don't even get that amazing Universal Studios 100th Anniversary advertisement. All up I'd have to give this film an 8.3/10 and strongly recommend it for horror fans who can handle drama level pacing and film fans in general who enjoy drama films.
