Gregory Maguire, in his book Wicked, incorporated more of the 1939 version of Dorothy, played by Judy Garland. Both novels describe Oz as a country cut off from the rest of the world in the form of a far-flung land.

When the party found her hut, Singra turned Dorothy to a stone statue and sent a ransom note to Ozma, saying she would release the two girls if she was made Ruler of the Quadling Country again.
