Celebrating the Winter Solstice with Pagan Yule Decorations

By admin

Yule decorations have pagan origins and are closely associated with the winter solstice festival, which celebrates the return of light and the beginning of longer days. The pagan holiday of Yule predates Christmas and was celebrated by various ancient cultures, including the Norse, Germanic, and Celtic peoples. One of the most well-known Yule decorations is the Yule log, which symbolizes the rebirth of the Sun. The log is often a large tree trunk or log that is burned in the fireplace to bring warmth and light during the darkest time of the year. It is customary to save a piece of the Yule log to use as kindling for the following year's celebration. Evergreen plants, such as holly, mistletoe, and ivy, are also popular Yule decorations.
