Unico the Island of Magic is a Japanese animated film that was released in 1983. It is based on the manga series by Osamu Tezuka and is directed by Moribi Murano. The film tells the story of Unico, a small white unicorn with the magical ability to bring happiness to those he meets. The film begins with Unico being kidnapped by the goddess of loneliness, Moura. She brings him to an island ruled by the evil magician, Kuruku. Kuruku is jealous of Unico's ability to bring happiness and wants to remove it from him.
Like The Fantastic Adventures of Unico, the film was dubbed into English, released on VHS, and shown on the Disney Channel during the eighties. Discotek Media gave the film a bilingual DVD release in 2012, marking the first time the original Japanese version was commercially available in America. Sadly, it is once again out of print in the U.S.
The film is the second to be based on the character the first being The Fantastic Adventures of Unico and, like its predecessor, was created by Sanrio and Tezuka Productions with animation by Madhouse. As the man continues to step forward, extending his arm out and pointing at Yamaneko, the orange tabby tries to reason with him, but ultimately runs away.
Kuruku is jealous of Unico's ability to bring happiness and wants to remove it from him. With the help of his assistant, Toby, Kuruku tries to undo Unico's magic. However, his plans are thwarted when Unico befriends Kukku, a young girl who has been transformed into a Sphinx by Kuruku's magic.
