If only all hikes were this easy. Exploring above the timberline couldn't be much easier than at Timberline Lodge, where you can ride a summer sightseeing chairlift to 7,000 feet and hike back down to the lodge at 6,000 feet.
No sweat needed.
Hop aboard the Magic Mile Express chairlift and 10 or 15 minutes later you're getting off at the 7,000-foot level. The skiers and snowboarders can ride another lift, the Palmer Express, to 8,500 feet, but this lift isn't open to foot passengers.
The Magic Mile Sky Ride is usually enough anyway. It's open to foot traffic from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily in summer. You can even ride it down if you want. Cost is $15; buy the ticket at the bottom of the Magic Mile lift. The schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.
Right now, there is still plenty of snow in the lower canyons so that skiers and snowboarders can descend all the way to the lodge.
Most foot passengers don't want anything to do with the snow. After getting off at the top, they do need to cross about a 100-yard wide swath of snow to reach the Silcox Hut. From there, they can take the Mountaineers Trail all the way back down to the lodge without hitting more snow, except for a patch or two down by the lodge where the trail splits into a variety of paths.

Right now, the snow is put to good use by the summer ski /snowboard campers and provides entertainment for hikers.
Just below the top of the Magic Mile, the snow is carved into a full-size halfpipe, then is piled up to make three big air jumps, followed by a rail park. It's fun to watch the young skiers and snowboarders in action.
It will be another couple of weeks before most all the snow has melted to give a clear shot for hikers north or south from the lodge on the Pacific Crest Trail, though experienced hikers can follow it easily now.
