The rest of the movie becomes about the two’s separate quests, which as expected ultimately converge. Ikazuchimaru enters his family’s castle grounds alongside a farmer and his family (who he had helped earlier), who then attempt to protect him from the minions of Daijo Yuki by pretending he is the farmer’s son-in-law. This doesn’t work very long, though, and Daijo Yuki and Company murder the farmer and then face Ikazuchimaru’s magic ninja wrath before he is interrupted by the appearance of Orochimaru. This introduces a slightly different dynamic to the revenge plot—Ikazuchimaru has separate reasons for going after both Daijo Yuki and Orochimaru, but Daijo Yuki is really not the main antagonist here because he can’t do anything against Ikazuchimaru and his supernatural abilities. In fact, Daijo Yuki is so expendable that even Orochimaru plans on assassinating him so he can take over the land by pretending to be Ikazuchimaru (he can do this because he has his own ninja underlings inform everyone that the prince has returned, but since no one actually knows what the prince looks like, he can easily claim to be him—this is actually a pretty sound plan.) While Daijo Yuki is shown to be another corrupt lord (having both decadent celebrations at the castle and, again, an army that uses rifles), it doesn’t linger on the oppression like in Daimajin, and the most evil thing he does after the opening scenes is kill the farmer and kidnap his daughter (she disappears for most of the movie, while her younger brother becomes the kid sidekick—again, just like in Daimajin), so the drama feels a little looser and less personal. The focus really is on the rivalry between Ikazuchimaru and Orochimaru, leading up to their final, kaiju showdown.
Produced by powerhouse studio Toei which would become the dominant force in tokusatsu television with their endless Kamen Rider and Super Sentai shows it is definitely a much lighter piece of filmmaking than something like Daimajin , stagier and focusing a lot more on silly action set pieces, but at least it didn t feel like I was watching the same movie again.
