Level Up Your Swift Skills with Total Magic

By admin

Swift is a programming language created by Apple for developing iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS applications. It was first introduced by Apple in 2014 and has gained popularity quickly due to its ease of use and powerful features. Swift is often referred to as "total magic" because of its ability to simplify the development process and provide a seamless experience for developers. It offers many features that make it easier to write clean and concise code, reducing the chances of errors and improving overall efficiency. One of the key features of Swift is its type inference system, which allows developers to write code without explicitly specifying the type of each variable. This feature makes the code more readable and reduces the amount of code needed to achieve the same result.

Swift Cruisers Anyone

The Swift Cruiser series is a recent addition to Swift's line of boats, so there is not much feedback out there regarding their use as a lake\portage multi day tripping boat. As I'm looking for a lighter boat and my kneeling days seems to be over, I'm curious whether one of these boats would fit my needs.
Anyone?

From what I have heard the Cruiser line is a little more performance oriented and straight line tracker for lakes. The few reviews I have seen have been positive. Of course it would be best to try and test paddle it in coming warm weather. I get the gut feeling it is like the Bell/Northstar Magic.

I have not looked at the whole Swift website but it seems they offer a variety of seating options for most all their models. I find it interesting that the Cruisers first came out outfitted as pack canoes.. perhaps to satisfy the go fast pack canoe market ( Like Placids Shadow) then expanding the offering to higher seating options.

I test paddled the 16.8 Cruiser during my own quest for a sitting boat that I could love as much as my kneeling solos. I didn't like it. Seemed to have a lot of skin friction so took some muscle to push it along. Although it has some rocker it seemed very stubborn to turn. My Magic is much more maneuverable. But you might love the 16.8. most of my experience is kneeling so I'm just starting to put serious time into sit-down boats. It was lightly loaded (200 pounds) for my test paddle; I want a boat that performs well with or without a load (usually a dog for me). The 16.8 is very roomy and very comfortable and very stable. And light and nicely made. I want to try the 15.8 since it looks like the perfect size for me. I've seen highly positive reviews for the 14.8 but I prefer a bigger boat. Just FYI you might also consider a Keewaydin 15 if you want a versatile, capable boat that does everything well. For a sit-down boat I ended up with a Wenonah Advantage.

I test paddled the 15.8 Cruiser for about an hour on open water, light wind and chop as well as flat water, up creek when looking to replace my Summersong. Although built to look like a racing hull, the Cruiser seemed quite slow. Certainly not as fast as the Summersong, my older Whisper, or my Rapidfire. The s shaped gunnels seemed to really reduce any capacity for much of a load. I too settled on a Wenonah Advantage; I am too old to fully appreciate the speed, but the glide makes up for my lack of horsepower.

No, it was just a tad too heavy at 39 lbs, almost dropped her getting her up on the truck. Seems like every year my lifting 'threshold' gets a little lower. Probably should have sold the truck!

I have a cruiser 14.8 Last season was my first. Definitely not for moving water. Lakes and slowmoving water are where this boat shines. I like it. fast. Swift seats are very comfortable. I am geared for 5 days in these pictures. (Ambajesus lake, Maine)

For the two of you who chose the Wenonah Advantage, did you also test a Prism? If so, what swayed you to your choice?

The reason I went with an Advantage is that I was specifically looking for a fast cruising boat and I don't need the versatility of the Prism because I have six other solo canoes. It's been many years since I paddled a Prism so I'm not comfortable commenting about how it compares to an Advantage.

I have a Prism, a Magic also, but I was under the impression that the Advantage was a lower sheerline trim of the Prism. Gumpus, are you Tom on pnet?

Yes, I tested the Prism as well. It was close and I went with the Advantage as it has a little better glide/faster/easier to propel with aging horsepower (and I really liked its little cousin the Whisper). To me, they were equally stable and both faster than the Cruiser. Truthfully, I did have second thoughts, tho'. As much as I love the boat, it is a real handful in heavy winds and rear chop; best to just get off the water, I guess.

Thanks. I’ve never paddled the Advantage. My Prism can be a pain in the wind, especially empty, especially trimmed incorrectly. Too much weight in the bow makes it a total pig. But proper trim is essential for any solo, not just the Prism. Trimmed right (with a compliant child) it’s great though not very turny.

I test paddled the Swift Cruiser 14.8 and 15.8 recently. I'm 5'9" and around 175 lbs, and the 14.8 fit me very well. The 15.8 fit too, but I felt the wind pushing me around in the 15.8, and I was more one with the boat in the 14.8.

Both canoes were nice, and paddled well, but I wasn't wowed by them. They just seemed like nice canoes. To me they weren't worth switching from my Hornbeck New Tricks 14 for. The seat was more comfortable. But the paddle was similar.

I visited Placid Boatworks that same day and test paddled a Rapidfire. As soon as I sat in the canoe it just clicked and everything about it felt right. That test paddle made it worth it for me to put a deposit down on the Rapidfire. The Rapidfire is comfortable, roomy for gear, and fast. I was going to keep my Hornbecks until the Rapidfire was ready, but a used Spitfire 13 came up locally, and I ended up buying it. I sold my Hornbecks.

Day paddles in the Spitfire 13 have been very comfortable in comparison to the seating in the Hornbecks. The Spitfire is not as fast as the Rapidfire, but I wasn't expecting it to be. It has plenty of room for the gear that I take on my trips. Looking forward to loading it up for a trip and seeing how things fare.

Interesting review WB. Thanks for posting.
I have always wondered if I could get a Rapidfire across the border without paying too much duty. Hardly ever seen one up here and absolutely nothing on the used market.

I thought there was no duty on canoes between US and Canada?

I think the Swift Cruisers are meant to 'look' fast without actually being so. At least that's the impression they left me with. Curious as to your extended experience with the Placids. I had both the Spitfire 13 and the Rapidfire, loved the look and build quality, but both exhibited an annoying tendency to skid to the left or right when you took the foot off the gas. Some folks have experienced the same anomaly, others not at all.

Approximate cost to make a magic item activation "swift"?

I have a unique magic item in my game that is a chain of reach; as a standard action, rip of as many links of the chain as you like. For one minute you get additional melee reach equal to (# of links x 5'). Rip off 3 links, and your reach becomes 20'. The chain has a finite number of links.

If you were a wizard altering this item after-the-fact (which I allow), how much would you charge to change the activation from a standard action to a Swift action?

How about to a Move action?

I don't need an exact, precise number; just sort of a ballpark for what to charge. Thanks for any advice you can give!

The first thing I'd compare this to would be the quicken spell metamagic. So, if the original effect was similar to a 2nd level spell, that'd be 6th level if quickened and the price would be increased by a factor of 11 (6*11/2*3). If that didn't look right I'd borrow a copy of the magic item compendium and start digging for comparisons.

Mistwell

Crusty Old Meatwad (he/him)

My instincts say multiple the total value of the item by 1.5 for move action, and 2.0 for swift action.

It's important to keep in mind this is a finite-use item, not a constant item. It shouldn't be huge multiples, because realistically that's just another way of saying you can't do it.

Piratecat

Sesquipedalian

Good advice. Thank you.

Now I wish I had figured out what the item was worth.

Mistwell

Crusty Old Meatwad (he/him)

What is the average character level of the party you gave this item to, and do you consider it about an average piece of magic item treasure as-is (with the standard action trigger) for this party relative to their other items?

If so, using the treasure level guidelines in Magic Item Compendium you can just quickly assign a value to it currently, and then calculate the costs to improve.

Nifft

Penguin Herder

Price it in reduced duration: if you rip off a link as a Swift action, your reach lasts this round.

And charge 25k for the privilege.

If you're starting from scratch, a 5' reach increase is sorta similar to a martial script of the Burning Brand manoeuver in ToB - from the ToB cards download on the Wizards website,

Burning Brand
Desert Tempest
Desert Wind (Boost) [Fire]
Level: Swordsage 2
Initiation Action: 1 swift action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: End of turn
Your weapon transforms into a roaring gout of flame. As you swing your burning blade, it stretches out beyond your normal reach to scorch your foes.
When you initiate this maneuver, your weapon turns into a burning brand for the rest of your turn. The brand increases your reach by 5 feet, and your melee attacks made with the brand deal fire damage equal to your normal melee damage. You still gain all the normal benefits from a high Strength score, feats, and other effects that increase your melee damage. For example, an attack with a longsword that normally deals 1d8+4 points of slashing damage would instead deal 1d8+4 points of fire damage. You otherwise attack with your weapon as normal.
This maneuver is a supernatural ability.

Taylor Swift And The Magic Number Three

The Rule of Threes is a common organizing principle based on the idea that three is an easy number to remember. The rule has had many manifestations throughout history:

  • The Holy Trinity
  • Aristotle’s Beginning, Middle, and End
  • A genie grants three wishes

Taylor Swift’s extraordinarily successful Eras Tour is currently breaking records around the world, as seen in three stunning statistics. According to a New York Times article:

  • $14 million in ticket sales per night
  • 146 stadium dates
  • $1.4 billion estimated total sales for the entire tour

In another New York Times article, reporter Brian Seibert analyzed Taylor Swift’s appeal and stage presence. In doing so, he noted three major factors that any presenter can adopt and use in their next presentation:

This feature makes the code more readable and reduces the amount of code needed to achieve the same result. Swift also provides a modern and expressive syntax, making it easy to read and write code. It supports many advanced language features, such as optionals, closures, and generics, which allow developers to write more efficient and flexible code.

Connection with the Audience.

Seibert noted that when Swift “pointed at a section of SoFi Stadium, [and] the cheering from that section somehow got louder.” He went on to point out that this demonstrates Swift’s “ability—with the magnification of giant video screens—to connect with every member of the crowd.”

The Lesson: You don’t need to point to your audience or to have a giant video screen, but you can connect with your audience by offering benefits frequently. A simple way to do this is to punctuate your narrative from time to time with a sentence that begins with, “The reason this is important to you is____.” Fill in the blank with a specific benefit to your audience.

Another way to connect with your audience is to research details about the company or companies who will be attending. Then, throughout your presentation, make direct reference to them as they relate to your company, product, or service.

Swift total magic

Another powerful feature of Swift is its memory management system, which uses Automatic Reference Counting (ARC) to manage memory automatically. This eliminates the need for developers to manually allocate and deallocate memory, reducing the chances of memory leaks and crashes. Swift also offers a rich set of standard libraries and frameworks that make it easy to develop applications. It integrates seamlessly with existing Objective-C code, allowing developers to leverage their existing codebase and legacy systems. Overall, Swift "total magic" can be attributed to its simplicity, power, and efficiency. It has revolutionized the world of iOS development and has become the preferred language for many developers. With its continuous improvements and updates, Swift is expected to remain a popular choice for developing Apple applications in the future..
