Sleeping Beauty Is Getting A Gory Horror Remake

Sleeping Beauty's Massacre takes the classic fairy tale in a horrifying new direction.

By Sean Thiessen | Updated 6 months ago

Sleeping Beauty is about to become a nightmare. As reported by Bloody Disgusting, filmmaker Louisa Warren is bringing the classic fairytale back from the dead as the horror film Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre. Warren teased her take on the beloved material as “savage, dark, and utterly horrifying.”

Disney created the definitive take on Sleeping Beauty with its 1959 animated classic, but the story is much older than the movie. The fairytale exists in the public domain, making it fair game for adaptation. Producer/director Louisa Warren and screenwriter Jasmine Ebony Thomas are leveraging the story’s fame and putting their signature, low-budget horror spin on it.

“This film will flip everything as you know it on its head,” Warren said. “I am setting out to create the most uncomfortable horror experience to date. There will be lies, gore, and a big massacre. If you look back at the original material there is so much to play with.”

Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre follows Princess Thalia, a beautiful young woman whose life is cast into shambles after the death of her father. The power-mad Queen Velma casts Thalia into a never-ending sleep in order to take the Kingdom for herself, but her actions unravel a winding array of violent consequences.

Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre will be produced by ChampDog Films, a prolific indie studio specializing in low-budget horror fare, and distributed by ITN Studios. The film is scheduled to begin production in the UK this August and release later in 2023.

Before ChampDog Films gets its bloody paws on Sleeping Beauty, the studio is scheduled to produce Cinderella’s Curse, which is also slated for a 2023 release. The gory takes on Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty represent part of a larger trend in the low-budget horror space as more filmmakers take recognizable, beloved titles from the public domain and make them terrifying.

Blood and Honey, a Winnie the Pooh horror movie

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey drew tons of attention online for its egregious assault on a beloved childhood classic. The Mean One took a similar approach to Dr. Suess’s Grinch character, turning the green holiday hater into a vicious murderer.

ChampDog Films has also dabbled with titles based on classic characters, turning leprechauns, the Tooth Fairy, and scarecrows into mutilating monsters. Even at the low-budget level, the film market is being driven by franchises.

Reboots, sequels, prequels, and spin-offs abound because they have brand recognition. Disney went so far as to expand the 75-minute Sleeping Beauty into multiple movies with its Maleficent series. Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre can ride the coattails of the fairytale it is inspired by, catching the audience’s attention and stirring buzz simply by its association with other beloved films.

This horror remake, however, is shaping up to be quite different from the Sleeping Beauty most people are accustomed to. With different characters, an overhauled narrative, and plenty of blood and guts, Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre will not find its way into the Disney Vault anytime soon.

In the meantime, director Louisa Warren will continue cranking out horror films at a jaw-dropping pace. She currently has 22 directorial efforts in the pipeline. The low-budget horror movie market is one of excess in perhaps every way but money, but these cheap thrills find their audience, niche as it may be.

Every once in a while, one of these obscure horrors becomes a hit – look at last year’s Terrifier 2. Time will tell if the horror version of Sleeping Beauty can become a breakout nightmare of its own.

The Curse of Sleeping Beauty (Scott Glasgow)

Coinciding with the film’s limited release on May 13, Scott Glasgow’s religiously inspired music for The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is released by MovieScore Media . Directed by Pearry Teo, the film is a dark re-imagining of the classic Brothers Grimm story. Thomas Kaiser (Ethan Peck) inherits a mansion that has been in his family for generations, only to learn that he has also inherited an ancient curse dating from the age of the crusades. Forced into his new role as “protector”, the guardian appointed to keep the evil demons in the house at bay, Thomas must unravel the mystery of the house, while struggling to awake the beautiful Sleeping Beauty (India Eisley).

“The gothic fantasy/horror film has music that is exotic/otherworldly combined with gothic horror orchestral gestures” explains the composer. ”There is a blend of religiousness using choir singing Latin adaptations of liturgical text transformed to fit the film subject which is combined with exotic instruments such as the Tibetan “kangling” (bone trumpet) and Aztec “death flute”. There is also the traditional orchestra and sorrowful cello solos that balance the two worlds of the film.”

In an unusual collaboration with MovieScore Media’s producer Mikael Carlsson, Scott Glasgow was able to utilize the voices of Swedish choir Johannebergs Vokalensemble for the recording of the score. Also, for the film’s surreal film sequences, Carlsson himself provided the countertenor solos. The CD release of the score contains extensive liner notes by the composer, including the text for the Latin chants.

Composer Scott Glasgow graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in composition and earned his Bachelors of Music degree from Cal State Northridge in composition as well. Following his breakout work on the revitalized anime classic Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (2006), Glasgow’s scores released by MovieScore Media include the urban thriller Chasing Ghosts (2005), the brilliant homage-laden score for the horror comedy Hack! (2007), the neo noirish thriller Toxic (2009) and Lo (2009), a macabre ensemble piece about love which was nominated ‘Best Score for a Comedy’ by the International Film Music Critics Association. His most recent release with the label was the thriller Poker Night (2015).

The Curse of Sleeping Beauty

You know when you see a film advertised that would be perfect for the low budget TV station ‘The Horror Channel’ in the UK but it has somehow found its way onto Netflix? That’s what you have with ‘The Curse of Sleeping Beauty”.

Even just looking at the Netflix image I get the feeling that this is going to be a horrible film. I could be completely wrong, but it basically just looks like a gothic version of the “Sleeping Beauty” fairy tale, but done with very little skill or affection. It does look visually distinctive, but it takes more than just looking ok to actually be a good film, and I get a feeling that in several hundred words, when I start the summary section, I won’t be overwhelmed by a great film.

I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt I will be.
Plot

Thomas (Peck) has been having a recurring dream in which he sees a beautiful woman (Eisley) sleeping, but he wakes before he can kiss her. One day he gets notified that an unknown uncle has died and left him a large house, using the word ‘curse’ several times in the process. The letter urges him to never go into the basement, but Thomas has very little intention of keeping the house and gets it valued.

Soon after first entering the house he dreams of the woman again, but this time he is able to kiss and wake her. She says that she is somewhere in the house and needs to be awoken in the real world so that they can be together. Thomas finds himself no longer able to stay away from the house for a few days without getting deathly ill, but he can’t stay there for long as an evil spirit has now awoken.

So is this destined for “The Horror Channel”?

I have little doubts that this will end up on that channel as it is without doubt their type of horror film. Don’t get me wrong, I love “The Horror Channel” but there is little doubt that the majority of the films on there aren’t that good, so “The Curse of Sleeping Beauty” suits that perfectly. I am genuinely surprised that Netflix picked this is up.

The main problem with “The Curse of Sleeping Beauty” is that is completely lifeless and has precisely zero charisma. It’s just kind of there. Ethan Peck is a poor leading man and whilst India Eisley definitely has the look, especially in the final few scenes, her acting leaves a lot to be desired. I love that the film actually tries to look great, such as actually using camera podiums and tripods (therefore avoiding the problems of on the shoulder cameras shaking all over the place), and the lighting is actually great, but no-one that appears on screen will come out of this movie with any kind of positive credit.

There is very little to keep you interested in the film, and nothing sums that up better than the fact that after about fifty of the eighty-six minute run time, I was able to leave my house and go to the shops to buy a drink. There was no urge to see the film all of the way through, and one of the reasons for this was that not only is the story told in a boring way, it is exceptionally predictable. I was able to call the ending from near enough the beginning of the movie, and not just the obvious part of him finding her in the real world.

I really don’t know what more I can say about this film. It’s far from the worst film that I have ever watched, and it’s certainly not anywhere near as bad as a lot of the films that I have reviewed for this site, but that’s the only praise that I can really give it.

Summary

Poor-acted snorefest that looks great, but has very little else going for it.

The cast is full of people who probably have a history of modelling, but have no acting skill to back up their looks. That sums up the film really. Visually decent but with nothing to back it up. It’s filled with jump-scares and predictable plot points that make it more tedious to watch. Even at a mercifully short eighty-six minutes, “The Curse of Sleeping Beauty” definitely drags.

Just don’t waste your time.

"Shanta and the Pirates Curse 3DS" fell short of my expectations. The gameplay mechanics were tedious, and the levels felt repetitive and uninspired. The game also suffered from a lack of variety in enemies and challenges. Additionally, the boss battles were not challenging enough and lacked creativity.
