Rocky Ford

The literal-minded explorer Kit Carson crossed the Arkansas River at a shallow spot filled with shale and boulders and dubbed it Rocky Ford Crossing Place.

The name stuck when two men traveling west with a wagon train decided to stop at the site and build a general store. The small community begun by G. W. Swink and Asa Russell in 1871 was actually about two miles from the current Rocky Ford. The town moved 13 years later, following placement of railroad tracks. Now, the town nestles around Highway 50, the only coast-to-coast highway in the United States.

From the start, melons were the staple of Rocky Ford. Today, Rocky Ford cantaloupes and watermelons have fans worldwide, thanks to the Arkansas Valley’s dramatic temperature swings from day to night (the greatest disparity in the country) that encourage the melons to sweeten. Lucille Ball was reportedly such a fan she had Rocky Ford melons delivered to her dressing room.

The town’s high school mascot is a muscular melon, and the team is called the Meloneers. In 1878 G. W. Swink established the tradition of Watermelon Day, sharing his own crop with a train passing through. In 1887, the same year the town was incorporated, Swink was elected as its first mayor.

G.W. Swink also established the Arkansas Valley Fair.

In 1899, hoping to diversify the town’s economy, the energetic Swink successfully pressed for construction of a sugar factory in Rocky Ford, and sugar became another leg to the economic table that lasted for 80 years.

History remains an integral part of life in Rocky Ford. Both Watermelon Day and the Arkansas Valley Fair, held the second full week in August, continue today, reminding residents and visitors of the area’s history and celebrating the sweet produce. The fair is the oldest continuous fair in the state. Most construction in the town dates to the 1960s and earlier.

The town’s Grand Theatre, which is community run by volunteers, is the longest-running movie theater in the state.

In 1988 Rocky Ford began the Arkansas Valley Balloon Festival. The Arkansas Valley Balloon Festival is held each year the weekend with the first Friday of the month of November.

The Rocky Ford Meloneer is in the running for best food-based Mascot

ROCKY FORD — A unique small-town's Colorado high school mascot is part of a nationwide mascot competition.

Rocky Ford High School is competing to have their mascot in the running for the best high school mascot in the food category.

They are competing against 14 other mascot high schools around the U.S. and two other Colorado high schools with the hopes of becoming the winning melon with their mascot called the Rocky Ford Meloneer.

KOAA News5 spoke with a student about what makes this mascot unique.

"Well you see the melon fields when you pass by the highway we are known for having the sweetest and tastiest melons in the nation so we take pride in that it is interesting and kind of cool," said Mateo Martinez, a Rocky Ford High School senior.

Today, the Rocky Ford Melons and Cantaloupes are world famous, just like the mascot is uniquely an Arkansas Valley treasure. Rocky Ford melons are known to be some of the sweetest in the world due to dramatic temperature changes in the Arkansas Valley from day to nighttime.

Some other mascots in this vote include the Brush Beatdiggers, the Colorado Rocky Mountain Oysters, and Cairo high school Syrup Makers out of Georgia.

Colorado's 7 most unique high school nicknames

Chances are you've heard of the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, the Wichita State Shockers and maybe even the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes.

While clever and interesting nicknames can be found across the country at universities in almost every state, colleges aren't the only educational institutions with unique school representatives. There are plenty in the Centennial State as well. Here are some of Colorado's most unique high school nicknames.

Rocky Ford Meloneers: The muscular melon mascot represents Rocky Ford's history of growing world-famous cantaloupes and watermelons. According to the welcome center website, the town’s dramatic temperature swings from day to night encourage the melons to sweeten. The town was incorporated in 1887 and celebrated its first Watermelon Day the next year.

Steamboat Springs Sailors (Steamboat Springs Athletics)

Steamboat Springs Sailors: It might seem silly to introduce a Sailor mascot in a land-locked state, but a short history lesson on the area might help us understand. Steamboat Springs has a rich Native American history as Ute Indians used the Yampa Valley as summer hunting grounds for hundreds of years, and used the springs as a sacred place for physical and spiritual healing. But it was the French who are thought to have named the area thanks to a chugging sound from the mineral springs, which they mistook for a steamboat engine.

Lake City Fourteeners (Lake City Athletics)

Lake City Community 14ers: Lake City is located near by five of Colorado’s 53 14ers, and seven 13ers. The area was inhabited by Ute Indians where they hunted and fished in the high mountain valleys according to the town's historical website. The town was incorporated in 1873 after a treaty was negotiated with the Utes, who gave up their rights to the mountains. After incorporation the town served as a supply center for miners and prospectors traveling down the Colorado Mineral Belt. Once the mining era was over the town began to transition into a tourist destination.

Aspen Skiers (Aspen Athletics)

Aspen Skiers: This one should seem pretty self-explanatory, but here’s a little history of the now-booming ski town. In the 1880s Scandinavian silver miners nailed leather foot straps to 10-foot long wooden boards, introducing “Norewgian skees,” which helped them travel down from the mine on Aspen mountain in mere minutes. In 1936 the first Aspen-area ski lodge was built, giving visitors access to a room, meals, lessons and hike-to-ski terrain. In 1937 an eight-person boat tow was built to transport skiers to the top of the run. Passengers paid 10 cents per ride. Two years later the Aspen Ski Club began holding competitions. It wasn’t until 1946 that a modern chair lift was built. A day pass cost $3.75.

Brush Beetdiggers (Brush Athletics)

Brush Beetdiggers: In 1867 Army Brig. Gen. Jared Lemar Brush and his troops were searching along the South Platte River looking for food when they discovered a sugar beet, which likely grew from seeds dropped by early settlers. Around 1903 the Great Western Sugar company convinced local farmers to plan 1,100 acres of beets. By 1904 the town harvested 3,000 tons of beets. Colorado would soon become the world leader in production of beet sugar and many farmers in the area continue to grow the crop as a driving force of the local economy.

Clear Creek Golddiggers (Clear Creek Athletics)

Clear Creek Golddiggers: The Colorado Gold Rush began in Clear Creek on Jan. 7, 1859, when George A. Jackson discovered gold at the confluence of Chicago Creek and Clear Creek in Idaho Springs. Though many looked to Pikes Peak as the guidepost for gold-seekers, coining the term, “Pikes Peak or Bust!”, Clear Creek County ranks seventh among gold-producing counties in Colorado, and produces even more silver. Tourists can still pan for gold in Clear Creek, though you’ll most likely find gold “dust” rather than the large nuggets seen in Hollywood.

Alamosa Mean Moose (Alamosa Athletics)

Alamosa Mean Moose: While it may be rare to see a wild moose roaming in town, Alamosa has a deep love for its famous Mean Moose mascot. Former Alamosa principal Mark Meyer told The Denver Post in 2009 that there’s a tale that describes an ancient ancestor of today’s moose, that was taller and fiercer than the modern moose, and was colored a deep maroon, like the Alamosa high school colors.

'Everyone wants to be an Indian': Should Cheyenne Mountain keep or alter its mascot?

A lot has changed at Cheyenne Mountain, but the debate surrounding the Indian mascot, which has been in place since 1940, still looms. After last week’s announcement that the Washington football club will drop its name and mascot, which some argue is a racist depiction of Native Americans, pressure for local change has risen again.

"G2a magic queen" had potential, but it failed to deliver. The game promised a rich open world, but the environments felt empty and lacking in detail.
