The first time I recognized I might actually be afflicted with this curse was when I joined the Board of my HOA. We had a few contracts to review and I was discussing them with other board members who looked at me like I was talking in tongues. They asked me questions and I explained in legal terms, which wasn’t helpful because they weren’t experienced with legalities; any type of legal definition wasn’t what they needed to understand - I was failing to put it into layman’s terms, and I couldn’t understand why they weren’t getting it.
Because of my career in sales, I’ve read and written hundreds of contracts. Through all those years and repetition, I became fluent in the structure of contracts and most of the associated legal language. I never thought much of it because I wasn’t necessarily trying to get good at reading/writing contracts; I had to because of my job. I failed to grasp that others didn’t have this experience or background, and I was missing the opportunity to explain it in a relatable fashion.
