The Role of Witches in Ligonier's Local Legends

By admin

Witches in Ligonier, PA Ligonier, a quaint small town located in Pennsylvania, holds a fascinating history when it comes to witches. The notion of witches in Ligonier dates back to the early colonial period, when the town was first settled by European immigrants. With its rich folklore and mysterious legends, Ligonier became a hotbed for tales of witchcraft and supernatural occurrences. As the story goes, Ligonier was home to a coven of witches who would gather under the cover of darkness to perform their rituals and cast spells. These witches were believed to have possessed immense powers and were feared by the townspeople. Many claimed to have witnessed strange phenomena, such as unexplained lights in the sky and eerie noises coming from the woods surrounding the town.

Hundreds Of Witches Perform A Choreographed Dance Routine In Ligonier, PA

On one day just before Halloween, hundreds of witches gather together in the small Laurel Highland town of Ligonier, PA. As the population of Ligonier is only 1,500, the witches form a large percentage of people in the town on that day. It is a popular annual event to raise money for charity. After gathering in Mellon Park, the witches pose for group photos before putting on a show with a series of choreographed dance routines to music such as Monster Mash and Thriller. After all of this, the witches spend the rest of the day wandering around the small town and its amenities. The Wild Images Team have been in Ligonier for a few Halloween seasons, and were able to capture photos as the witches were performing some of their dance routines. Enjoy the Halloween Season! The Wild Images Team has captured many other photos throughout Pennsylvania, including the postgame fireworks over the Andy Warhol Bridge, the colorful bursts of Independence Day fireworks over the Ohio River, the view as delicate flowers bloom in the Laurel Highlands, and the very early lantana at the University Park Flower Gardens, each of which is available for sale in our store. Our blog posts from Pennsylvania have documented the Halloween moment when hundreds of witches converged on Mellon Park and then later performed a choreographed dance routine, when The Wild Images Team attended an interfaith wedding ceremony during which our Coordinator Christina Orban was a bridesmaid, a look inside of the ornate St. Vincent Archabbey Basilica, the side yard greenhouse vividly reflecting light displays, the scene dominated by vibrant strands of holiday lights on a tree, the many hues of a very festive holiday house along McColly Street, the colorful view of the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Fall Foliage Train, the burst trails of fireworks over the Allegheny River, the red, white, and blue trail fireworks over the Roberto Clemente Bridge, the palette of colors with fireworks bursting over the Ohio River, the hundreds of American flags flying over Blairsville Cemetery, the fall leaves surrounding the Tyrone Division of the Pennsylvania System World War I Monument, the many colors of a flower soaking up sunshine, and the dichotomy created by a floral battle of yellow versus red. During our trips to New York on the other side of the state we have captured many photos such as in the Corning Museum of Glass antique cruets and dishware overlap, then in New York City itself the sudden snow squall over the Garment District, the scene of the Sherry-Netherland towering over a sculpture, and the opposite directed festive view of West 58th Street, each of which is available for sale in our store. Our New York blog posts document the Corning Museum of Glass plate of colorful giant glass fruit, the intricate stained glass vines and bubbles over a figure, and the suspended glass knives in front of a red stack tower, then in New York City itself the Empire State Building shining like a beacon, the perpetual hustle and bustle of Times Square, the impressive bronze Alice in Wonderland sculpture, the memorial bronze statue of legendary Balto and its accompanying dedicated to the indomitable spirit plaque, the animated bronze animals and the Delacorte Clock, The Wild Images Team Coordinator Christina with Spongebob SquarePants, the festive view of a large toy train in Rockefeller Center Station, the late night giant holiday lights on the sidewalks, and the piles of giant holiday ornaments in Liholts Pooley Pool.

The waning autumn sun sets over Compass Inn Museum. Torches and newly carved Jack-O-Lanterns illuminate the walkways leading to the dimly lit rooms of this once-bustling stop. A cold breeze cuts through the air, rattling the dead leaves still clinging to the old maple tree. Compass Inn Museum's Hair-Raising History: Frightfully True Stories from the Ligonier Valley are ready to be told! As visitors begin to fill up the gravel sidewalks, a figure steps out of the Inn, approaching the excited patrons. A woman dressed in white. She beckons them to follow her into the comfort of the main room. The guests eagerly follow, hoping to catch a glimpse of an 18th-century apparition. As they enter the warmth of the room, the ghostly figure in white fades away into the darkness.

That's right! It's almost that time of year. Compass Inn Museum's Annual Halloween event begins Friday, October 27th, and continues thru Sunday, October 29th, held each night from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Living History Weekend: John Proctor's Historic Independent Battalion Encampment

  • Sat, Aug 19, 2023 10:00 AM 10:00 Sun, Aug 20, 2023 9:00 AM 09:00
  • Ligonier Valley Historical Society/Compass Inn Museum (map)

Step back in time on the historic grounds of Compass Inn Museum as Ligonier Valley Historical Society presents its final Living History Weekend of the summer. During the weekend, interact with present-day Proctor’s Independent Battalion of Westmoreland County, an American Revolutionary War Reenactment Unit that portrays military and frontier life in Southwestern Pennsylvania during the late 18th century.

John Proctor was the Sheriff of Westmoreland County during the mid-1700s. He was given the rank of Colonel after the Revolutionary War commanding the Pennsylvania 1st Battalion, one of the first military units formed west of the Allegheny Mountains. Proctor’s Independent Battalion, named after Colonel John Proctor, was formed and tasked with protecting the eastern border of Westmoreland County and the western frontier border of the Laurel Highlands from Native and British attacks. Interestingly around this period, the “Wild West” wasn’t as far west as one would think.

Present-day Proctor’s Independent Battalion will depict the lives of minutemen, men trained in weaponry and military strategies ready to fight at a minute’s notice, as well as their camp followers, ladies who may have been seamstresses, laundresses, cooks, female relatives, or wives of the soldiers. The battalion will be encamped with canvas tents and other daily survival gear on the Museum grounds throughout the entire weekend.

The reenactment group also includes traders and craftsmen possibly demonstrating rifle carving, general 18th-Century woodworking, tanning, quill pen and ink calligraphy, and other crafts essential for daily life of the late 18th Century. The men and women of Proctor’s Independent Battalion will give military demonstrations, including daily firing of muskets and a cannon along with a glimpse into the daily frontier lifestyle in Westmoreland County from 1775 through 1795, when Proctor’s Battalion was actively protecting the region. The Historical Society will have hands-on activities for visitors throughout the weekend, especially for children visiting the grounds.

Several of the reenactors have direct ties to early American military history through their ancestry. Scott Henry, current Captain of Proctor’s Independent Battalion, can tie his ancestry to one of the original Proctor’s battalion members, Joahan Jakob Galitin. “I take pride in leading this present-day reenactment unit as its Captain to keep this part of Westmoreland County history alive but also to connect with my family heritage who settled in this region,” comments Henry. Ligonier Valley Historical Society former board member and Proctor’s reenactor Tom Klingensmith also traces his lineage back to family members who settled in Hanna’s Town (south of modern-day Greensburg) during the 18th Century. Current Ligonier Valley Historical Society board member, Michael Doucette, traced his lineage back to an ancestor who fought in the campaign to take Fort Niagara during the French and Indian War. This tie to his personal heritage and love of history inspired Doucette to become a proud historical reenactor with Proctor’s Independent Battalion.

As always, tours of the historic Compass Inn and outbuildings will be included in the Living History admission fee. In addition, there will be cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations as well as a variety of activities for children. General admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors (62+), $10 for youth (6-17), and free for active members of the military, Ligonier Valley Historical Society members, and children ages 5 & younger. Tickets can be purchased on-site on the day of the event.

BURN WITCH BURN (1962) - DVD

Stars Janet Blair, Peter Wyngarde and Margaret Johnson. A really frightening version of the classic story Conjure Wife. About a school master's wife who secretly practices good witchcraft, to fight the forces of impending evil over an English college. Blair and Wyngarde (he played a ghost in THE INNOCENTS) are excellent!

This was made earlier in the 1940's as WEIRD WOMAN, with a totally different approach. This one is solemn, moody and keeps the fear growing right through the film. A creeper, to be watched late at night when others have gone to bed.

SANGREAL SODALITY OF NORTH AMERICA

TRADITION OR SPIRITUAL PATH: Sangreal

CONTACT NAME: Nemesius

The Sangreal Sodality is an inclusive spiritual confraternity founded by William G. Gray and Jacobus G. Swart in 1980. Its chapters, branches, and membership have spread all over the world since then. Active temples, sodalities and working groups can be found in South and Central America, North America, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is broadly kabbalistic in its orientation, ceremonialist in practice, and magickal in orientation.

“Sangreal” refers to the holy blood or holy grail, which is a guiding principle in western esotericism. The Sangreal is that which is best in human nature, and the pursuit of that shapes the mystery tradition upon which the Sangreal Sodality is built.

The Sangreal Sodality is not a church. Membership is open to any aspiring seeker belonging to any faith tradition or to no faith tradition whatsoever. Its purpose is to foster union of the divine with the human through selfless service to both. This service aims at developing what is best in each of us and in all of us together — the “Sangreal.”

The workings of the Sangreal Sodality, framed within the western ceremonial tradition and the Kabbalah, are designed to help each member of the Sodality realize their innate desire to do what is right, honorable, and good in our relations with self, other, nature, and Divinity, however that is understood.

The Sangreal Sodality draws for its inspiration upon the extensive writings of William Gray and Jacobus Swart.

Sodality members share a single central ritual in the Sangreal Sacrament. The Rite was conceived by William Gray as a ceremonial vehicle through which participants might become the kind of people who sacrifice the worst in themselves to serve the best in themselves and humanity, in accordance with the myths of sacred kingship and the quest for the Holy Grail. The ritual act allows participants an opportunity to shed their workaday burdens, deepening their connection with the Divine, sensitizing their physical and supernatural senses, and refining ordinary consciousness to reach a range beyond average awareness.

Our coven was founded in the Mt. Airy Section of Philadelphia in July 2011 and is the ninth ASW coven.

We believe in sharing what we know without pacts of secrecy, obscurity, or separation and often offer open rituals and workshops to the community. Our Upcoming Events are listed elsewhere on this site. We are willing to provide workshops by request and we love to hear about what others are offering. While we are committed to a Wiccan path, we also feel that it is very important to experience and trade information with other Traditions, Churches, Lodges, etc. There is much we can teach each other.

Modern day Wicca works with the magick of the elements of nature and honors the divine feminine. We continue to honor this lineage through many of our rites and rituals, by providing a thorough magickal training program and by maintaining the mysteries of initiation. However, as a progressive Wiccan coven we practice shared ritual leadership and consensus decision making amongst all initiates of the coven. WYOMING VALLEY CUUPS

TRADITION OR SPIRITUAL PATH: Pagan

CONTACT NAME: Shannon

Wyoming Valley CUUPS is an open, inclusive and affirming Earth-Centered Community based in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. We offer open public rituals, meditations, celebrations and gatherings grounded in Witchcraft and Pagan practices.

Our monthly Full Moon Labyrinth Walks are held the night of the Full moon every month. During the warmer months, we walk a lighted outdoor labyrinth at the UUCWC while during the colder months we walk a lighted labyrinth in the sanctuary of the church. These gatherings include drumming, tarot / divination readings (free) and fire outside (weather permitting). We also offer a monthly Online Full Moon Ritual via Zoom for both our online community and those that prefer a more quieter, solitary practice.

We gather to celebrate together each of the eight holidays, or Sabbats, on the Wheel of the Year, which mark the seasons of the Sun — the Solstices, the Equinoxes, and the points in between. These High Holiday rituals are held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wyoming Valley.

We are dedicated to the principles of Unitarian Universalism. We gather together in sympathy and accordance with our values and draw on the many ritual-based expressions of our Pagan spirituality.

There is no fee for any of our events. We are volunteers offering free and open gatherings of a wide variety. We are Witches, Druids, Wiccans, Hellenics, Heathens and continue to grow. Our diversity is our strength. We welcome you. Come bang on drums with us as we stay connected and come together to honor the Earth, Gods, Ancestors, and Wheel of the Year.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT: We, the Wyoming Valley CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) group of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wyoming Valley, honor the UUA 7th principle; “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part”.

We provide support to all seeking to live a life more in balance with nature by exploring the teachings and traditions of various Pagan and Earth-centered religions and philosophies.

We adhere to the mission statement of UUCWV, National CUUPS, and the principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

We promote personal responsibility and integrity, diversity and compassion, competency and education in the pursuit of spiritual balance.

We offer our talents and abilities in service to our fellow congregants at UUCWV and the greater Wilkes-Barre/Scranton community by providing celebrations to honor the Earth and its cycles. We seek both mirth and reverence, and we honor the Divine in many forms.

We provide an open and inclusive space for the Earth-Centered Community for Deeper Healing, Self-Knowledge and Cultivating Connection.
