Say 'Rabbit, Rabbit' For 31 Days Of Good Luck

According to the superstition, uttering the words on the first of the month will make you lucky for the rest of it. Host Rachel Martin speaks with public radio host and word-lover Martha Barnette about where the notion came from.

RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:

Rabbit, rabbit. Some of you may have said that first thing this morning. And for those still slowly rising - get to it, it could bring you good luck all month long. Saying rabbit, rabbit on the first of the month is supposed to be a harbinger of good fortune.

Few of us know the history behind this quirky saying. So we thought we'd get to the bottom of this question. Martha Barnette hosts the public radio show A Way With Words. She herself is a word lover, here to share with us some of the history and tradition of rabbit, rabbit. Hey, Martha. Welcome to the show.

MARTHA BARNETTE, BYLINE: Rabbit, rabbit.

MARTIN: Rabbit, rabbit to you. I don't know, can you use it as a greeting?

BARNETTE: If you haven't said anything else all day, and so I've been saving it.

MARTIN: This is the hard thing, right? Like, you're supposed to wake up first thing and the first thing out of your mouth on the first day of the month has to be rabbit, rabbit. And then you're lucky for the rest of the month?

BARNETTE: Exactly, yes. That ensures luck. And we don't know why, you know, rabbits have been associated with luck of one sort or another - usually good luck - for more than 2,000 years. But it's only in the early 1900s that we see written references to this superstition.

MARTIN: And it only works with rabbits, right? You can't say gopher, gopher.

BARNETTE: Yeah. I don't think that's going to work as well. But there are different variations of it. I mean, some people say rabbit, rabbit. In the U.K., it's quite common to say white rabbits. Gilda Radner was someone who was known to say bunny, bunny on the first day of the month; to ensure, as she put it, laughter, love and peace.

MARTIN: Wow. This has been around for a long time?

BARNETTE: At least since the early 1900s. In fact, another aficionado of this practice was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

BARNETTE: Yeah. He was known to carry a rabbit's foot during the 1932 election. We still have that rabbit's foot in a museum. And supposedly, he also said rabbit, rabbit at the beginning of every month.

MARTIN: And do you have any idea where this originated, geographically? Was this a British thing and migrated to the U.S., or where did it come from?

BARNETTE: I think you're right about that. And I'm not aware of any analogous saying in other languages.

MARTIN: And do you remember to do it every month, Martha?

BARNETTE: I resolve to do that, but then I usually forget. There are other people who are much better at that. Simon Winchester, the writer, went for 696 months before he forgot to say white rabbits one day. If you forget, at the end of the day, you can say black rabbit right before you can go to sleep; or you can say tibbar, tibbar.

MARTIN: Tibbar, tibbar?

BARNETTE: It's rabbit spelled backwards.

MARTIN: Ah. Martha Barnette, host of A Way with Words. She joined us from member station KPBS in San Diego. Thanks so much, Martha.

BARNETTE: Sure thing.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "I AIN'T SUPERSTITIOUS")

HOWLIN' WOLF: (Singing) Well, I ain't superstitious, but a black cat just crossed my trail. Well, I ain't superstitious, but a black cat just crossed my trail. Don't sweep me with.

MARTIN: This is NPR News.

Lunar Stellis Vs. Tibbar the Magic Rabbit

What would happen if Slagar the Cruel met Ballaw de Quincewold? Find out in this hilarious tale!

One day, Slagar the horridly ugly fox was taking a stroll around his fortress egotistically named after one of his many names, Lunar Stellis Castle. He took a drink from his well that he had crawled out of (*evil grin* Matthias better watch out!) He was soon intrrupted by a theatrical voice calling out to him.

"Soho! This is the lunatic that boasts to have powers far greater than my own! Well laddie buck, prepare to be amazed by Tibbar the Magic Rabbit!" Out of nowhere, a long legged hare leapt out heroically onto the scene. He was clad in Slagar's old Lunar Stellis costume only now, it was stained with bits of food. Slagar's eyes grew clod.

"Hah! I could out magic you any day rabbit! Stay right there!" He dashed off to his castle and donned a magical swirling cape. The two "magicians" faced each other and a random squirrelmaid (AKA Celandine) cheered Tibbar on.

"Go Tibbar, go Tibbar, go, go, go Tibbar!" Tibbar drew forth a top hat (I don't know where he got it) and disappeared in a poof of smoke. His paw came out of nowhere and he pulled himself out of his own hat. Slagar sneered and started pulling out cloth from his mouth. He pulled it all out and it was the tapestry of Martin the Warrior. Tibbar yawned.

"Pshaw! Amateur's work, let a master show you how it's done, you cad!" He reached down his throat and pulled out Martin the Warrior's sword. Slagar was panicking. Tibbar was indeed the most magical rabbit to ever have been born. But he would not give up.

"Ha! Feast your eyes on Slagar the Invincible!" Tibbar was not amused.

"Thought yore name was flippin' Slagar the Cruel, wot wot?" Slagar pulled out a cup of nightshade and chugged it. Tibbar was amazed at the fox's feat. Little did he know, that Slagar had built up an immunity for years. Tibbar clapped his paws.

"Well then time for the grand finale!" He pulled off the Lunar Stellis cloak and twirled it around and around and around until.

THWACK! CHUNCK! Slagar fell to the ground with a sharp dagger growing out of his middle, he coughed once, then fell over dead. Ballaw took off the Tibbar costume and removed the dagger to clean off in the grass. Mattias popped out of nowhere and paid the hare his fee: A huge load of food.

"Thanks for getting rid of Slagar for us Mr. Ballaw." Matthias said. The hare wolfed energetically on a pastie.

"No problem old scout. Give Basil my regards wot?" Celandine came out of the bushes and sat next to Ballaw.

"Was that the Deadly Dagger of Death?" She asked ditsy as ever.

"Yes, the very same I tried to kill you with only Brome got it mixed up with the trick dagger. Silly mouse." Celandine screamed and ran for comfort. Ballaw sighed. Some creatures have no sense of humor.

1018-23 NY Times Crossword 18 Oct 23, Wednesday

The Garment District in Manhattan established itself as the powerhouse of the nation’s garment industry by producing clothes for slaves on southern plantations. Slave owners found it more efficient to get clothes from New York than have the slaves make their own clothes. Up to this time, most American made their own clothes, so this really was a new industry. Business got a further boost with the need for ready-made uniforms for soldiers fighting in the Civil War. As the market increased, competition grew and costs had to be kept down. Manhattan had a ready supply of cheap labor, so it was able to keep up with demand. By the end of the 1860s, Americans were buying most of their clothes rather than making them.

Rise of Poison Ivy´s empire- Chapter 4: Zatanna

Barbara is happily sitting in a limousine, and she is on her way to Metropolis to seduce the heroes there. However, her nude body was not alone. Next to her sat a group of beautiful woman, pleasuring her body. She was Slutgirl, the leader of the Seducers and Poison Ivy´s second in command. “Listen up girls.” said Slutgirl, putting on a slideshow showing their targets. “These are our targets. Starting with the one we will control today, Zatanna. She will be attending the Metropolis Theater, putting on a magic show. Our goal is to seduce her, we need her to get to Wonder woman, even I aren’t powerful enough for the amazon. But with Zatanna’s magic and my secret weapon, we might stand a chance.

Zatanna was preparing for her magic show. This was her first time on this stage, but she felt ready. She put on her white shirt, jacket and black top hat before going out on stage. There was a huge audience. People looked excited and she heard a couple of applauses. A number of men also looked at Zatanna’s impressive rack. She didn’t care, as she had get used to it. If they can´t keep their eyes off her, that´s not her problem.

She started off by a simple magic trick. “Tibbar Tniag!” One of her rabbits turned giant, jumping around on the scene. The audience was in awe, applauding and cheering her on. She turned her rabbit into different colors, “Der!” “Wolley” “Eulb!” After her rabbit had turned back, the show continued. She did many tricks, including fire, flying, animals and more. Her final trick was her teleporting out. The show was finished, and it was a success.

Zatanna stood in her room backstage when she got a phone call. It was Wonder Woman. “Hello, Diana.” “Good evening, Zatanna, let me get straight to the point. Bruce told me that woman have been disappearing in Gotham City. When he interrogated one of the kidnappers, he discovered that Metropolis was their next target. He didn’t get a name though. Be careful.” “I will, thank you for the tip. I will investigate it when I´m done here.” “Zatanna, don´t take this lightly. Batgirl and Catwoman have disappeared following this criminal.” Yes, ma’am.” Wonder woman ended the call. “She really needs to learn how to take a joke.” Said Zatanna, mocking the older woman.

The door knocked. “Coming!” To her surprise, she was greeted by Batgirl. She was standing in her dirty Batgirl uniform, crying. “What happened, Barbara?” “Let me tell you. It all started with me investigating the Gotham Greenhouse.” She told her story, but leaving out everything after she met Ivy, saying that she managed to escape to Metropolis. “That´s crazy. Did she do anything to you? Batman told me that women have been disappearing in Gotham.” “Yes, they have, darling. And Mistress Ivy and I are behind it.” “Then we have to stop…wait did you just say that you was behind it!?”

Then she realized how stupid she had been. Batgirl´s eyes were glowing a faint green color. Batgirl hadn´t escaped Ivy, she had been converted. “Poison Ivy is controlling you, Batgirl. This is not you!” “Yes, it is, her voice sounding deeper and sultrier. She ordered a plant to cover Zatanna´s mouth and binding her to a chair. Seducers!” 5 nude women came in, bowing to Slutgirl. Barbara gave Selina a deep kiss. “You know what to do, just like we planned.” The other sluts walk out, leaving Zatanna alone with the former Catwoman.

Zatanna could not even react before Pussycat was on her. Selina ripped off her blouse and jacket, and quickly removed the rest of her clothes. Zatanna was scared. She had never had sex with a woman before. Though she had to admit it felt nice. NO, stop it Zatanna. Think of the mission. These woman are control by Ivy, they are not doing this by free will. With Zatanna´s clothes removed, Catwoman laid down on top of her body, and started to finger her victim´s pussy before offering her breasts to Zatanna. Zatanna refused to touch them.

“No? Well I hoped I could avoid this. But you give me no choice.” She put on mind-control lipstick on her lips, removes the vine covering Zatanna´s mouth, and kisses her before she can even utter a word. But Zatanna is not giving up that easily. She will call Wonder woman and…what was she doing again. The rest of Zatanna´s mind is focused on the seductive woman licking her nether regions. To her dismay, she is enjoying it, and when Selina walks out of the room, she feels confused.

She could escape any time, but wants to stay. Stay in her bed and wait for orders. She is still not fully entranced, but her mind is starting to change. That´s when a nude Slutgirl re-enters the room. Her pussy is dripping, having had sex with the seducers. “Enjoyed the time with Pussycat?” No answer. Zatanna´s eyes are blank, a struggle taking place inside of her. “Expected as much. Listen up Zatanna. I am Slutgirl, the leader of the seducers and Mistress Ivy´s personal lover. You are no longer Zatanna.” Her mind was starting to take in this information. “I…am…a…seducer.” “Good. And Mistress Ivy has chosen you for a seed. This seed of power will give you extraordinary abilities, like it gave me my incredible beauty.”

Slutgirl opened a small briefcase, picking up a red seed. Then she planted it and let it grow. In minutes, a red cocoon has appeared before their eyes. Zatanna walked inside it, closing tightly behind her. Her body was injected by thorns and liquids and pumped into her body. She screamed. The pain was unbearable, her magic power increasing for every second. Her eyes was glowing red, and her mind changed. Her body grew taller and more elegant. Every last part of her former self was replaced by the mind of an evil sorceress. She found a new purpose in life, to become the most powerful magic user in the universe and to serve Ivy. Then she walked out to Slutgirl.

Slutgirl was impressed. The seed had turned Zatanna into a beautiful tall woman with glowing red eyes. “What do you think, Mistress?” “You´re my best seducer yet, that´s what I think. I think you need to get an introduction to lesbian sex though. Let me show you.” Their nude bodies collided, and the night could begin.

Zatanna never got home that night. Her night was filled with sex, sweat and moans. When Slutgirl was done with her, she put on a black skintight long dress and high heel boots. She didn´t need practical clothes, her new magic could make her teleport and fly wherever she wanted. Put what the seed gave her most of all was power of the mind. With it, she could put anyone in a deep trance, converting women who resisted the pheromones of her fellow sisters. She was now the Black Queen, a sorceress who took control over women.

These mascots not only represent their companies but also evoke a sense of nostalgia and fond memories for gamers. In addition to representing a brand, technology mascots can also help in humanizing complex or technical products. For example, Microsoft's animated character, Clippy, was a mascot for Microsoft Office, providing users with helpful tips and assistance. Although Clippy was eventually retired, it served as a friendly face that made the software more approachable and user-friendly. Overall, technology mascots play an important role in the tech industry as they help in building brand recognition, establishing an emotional connection with consumers, and making complex technology more relatable.
