August 11, 2018 3:48 pm ET Meet Landshark Tony, Ole Miss’ official new on-field mascot.

Tony was officially introduced to fans Saturday at Meet the Rebels Day, and he was named after late former Ole Miss linebacker Tony Fein, who is credited with started the defense’s “Fins Up” celebration tradition, which ultimately inspired the mascot. The landshark follows the controversial Colonel Reb mascot as well as the Black Bear mascot. According to Tony’s new Twitter account, he likes Jimmy Buffet, Jaws — duh — and will wear Fein’s No. 47.

But there’s just one tiny problem with all this: Landshark Tony is actually terrifying. Not in a traditional Jaws shark way, but he’s kind of weird and creepy looking, like the costume was haphazardly thrown together in the dark. Seriously though, what is this thing? It doesn’t look like a real shark, it doesn’t look like Left Shark and, as college football’s Reddit account actually pointed out, it kind of looks like an iron. But regardless of what you think it looks like, this probably isn’t what many fans had envisioned for the new on-field mascot. So we rounded up our favorite reactions to Landshark Tony.

Ole Miss unveils terrifyingly strange new Landshark mascot named Tony

The Rebels unveiled their new “Landshark” mascot on Saturday and named him Tony. Cool, right? Well, maybe in a vacuum but the new costume for the mascot is, well. kind of terrifying and completely ugly.

I can’t be the only one who thinks Tony looks a bit like a stranger, costumed version of Bruce, the shark from Finding Nemo , right? Bleacher Report’s Adam Kramer also noted another uncanny resemblance too.

Either way, Tony is here to stay in Oxford and beyond for football games and more as the new mascot.

Per the school release:

A family with the passion of Ole Miss deserves a mascot with that same zeal. The Associated Student Body agreed, and in October 2017, initiated a campus vote to make the Landshark the official on-field mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels. Needless to say, the polls were nearly unanimous and overwhelming endorsed the proposal. For the 10 months that followed, university leaders teamed up with Hollywood’s most creative costume designers to bring a vision to life, and in August 2018, Tony burst onto the scene as the new spirit animal of Ole Miss. Named in honor of the first Rebel to throw “Fins Up,” Tony Fein, the new Landshark mascot exhibits the ferocity of a true Ole Miss Rebel while connecting with kids with his energetic and fun-loving character. There’s no place like Ole Miss, so shouldn’t the mascot be just as unique?

Ok then. We’re not convinced about him being fun-loving given how strange Tony looks but we’re sure opposing crowds in the SEC will welcome him with open arms this season and given him a, well, interesting introduction to the league this season.

Tony is known for his energetic and vibrant personality, always ready to pump up the crowd and support the team. As the landshark mascot, Tony represents the fighting spirit and determination of the Ole Miss Rebels. The landshark image originated from the football team's defensive play, with the defense being referred to as the "Landshark Defense.

With his fierce appearance and energetic personality, he has become an integral part of the Ole Miss community, spreading joy and enthusiasm wherever he goes..

Reviews for "Tony the Landshark: The Rise of a Mascot Phenomenon"

1. Emily - 2 stars - Tony the landshark mascot was a complete disappointment at the game. Not only was he creepy-looking, but he also had no rhythm or coordination during the halftime show. It felt like he was just flailing around aimlessly and it was hard to believe he was actually a professional mascot. I expected better entertainment from a professional sports event.
2. Jason - 1 star - I couldn't stand Tony the landshark mascot during the game. His constant interruptions and attempts to engage the crowd were more annoying than entertaining. He seemed desperate for attention and it was obvious that the crowd was not enjoying his presence. The whole mascot concept was a failure, and I hope they reconsider having Tony as the mascot in the future.
3. Sarah - 2 stars - Tony the landshark mascot was a major letdown. His costume looked outdated and cheap, and it was hard to take him seriously as a mascot. On top of that, his interactions with the fans were forced and lacked enthusiasm. Overall, his presence added no value to the game experience and I was disappointed with the choice of mascot.
4. Ryan - 1 star - Tony the landshark mascot was a nightmare. He seemed to have no sense of personal space and would constantly invade people's vicinity, making them uncomfortable. His attempts at being funny or engaging were cringeworthy and embarrassing. The mascot definitely needs some serious improvements or should be replaced altogether.
