It feels a little weird to read a witch book slightly outside of spooky season, on the verge of Santa season, but friends The Witch Hunt by Sasha Peyton Smith was worth my time. This young adult paranormal historical fiction is the sequel to The Witch Haven. I was so excited to see what happens next with Frances, Maxine and Lena — oh, and Finn and Oliver. The twists! This book actually managed to surprise me. Love that for my reading life.

The Witch Hunt is set two years after The Witch Haven. In this story, Frances and crew are in Paris. Frances’ magic is on the fritz. She’s feeling out of sorts. She also has an address burning a hole in her pocket. That address being her father’s — whom she only has the vaguest memories of. Also, Oliver is studying in Paris as well. Oh and it turns out that Finn also happens to be in France. To complicate matters further, the veil between the living and the dead is opened and it seems that it is up to Frances and team to figure out how exactly to close it. At the same time, Frances is still processing all her traumas from two years ago.
It took me a while to warm up, but I ended up really enjoying The Witch Hunt. I felt like the way this book deals with trauma was so valid. It isn’t just something you wake up and get over, but is something that can have impact for years. I was not expecting that for a pre WWI setting book about teenage witches. I also just loved the character development of Frances, Maxine and Lena. Those young women are amazing and each have a little something special. And the romance!! I am for sure a big fan of Oliver and Frances –they are a great couple if you are in your green flags are attractive era.
