Tennessee, also known as the Volunteer State, has had a long history of smokey mascots. Smokey is the beloved canine mascot of the University of Tennessee sports teams. The tradition of having a live mascot started in 1953 with Smokey I, a bluetick coonhound. Smokey I served as the mascot until 1954, when he passed away. Smokey II took over the duties from 1955 to 1964. During this time, the university implemented a formal selection process to find the perfect mascot.

Smokey VIII took over in 1994, followed by Smokey IX in 2004. The current mascot, Smokey X, has been serving since 2019. Each smokey mascot has played a vital role in representing the university at various sporting events, especially football games. The mascots participate in pre-game festivities, run alongside the football team as they enter the field, and engage with the crowd throughout the game.
