Throughout history, there have been numerous powerful witches who have left their mark on society. These women were often feared and admired for their extraordinary abilities and profound knowledge of magic. Although much of their stories are shrouded in mystery and myth, their influence continues to captivate the imagination. One of the most famous witches in history is Medea. In Greek mythology, Medea was a sorceress and the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis. She possessed incredible magical powers and was known for her ability to manipulate and control events to get what she desired.

Yesterday I had a wonderful afternoon over at Wicca Moon in Eltham.

Shirlee Moon, who runs the shop, had invited me over to read from my new book Pagan Portals - Poppets and Magical Dolls. I was very excited because I'd never actually been there before.

I know, it seems rather unbelievable that I'd never visited such a magical shop in south-east London considering that I live in south-east London, I've been friends on Facebook with Shirlee and other members of Wicca Moon's staff for quite some time, and I'm a pretty keen witch.

I'm really glad I've now made up for that and I will most certainly be popping in again regularly because the shop is lovely. It is a real Aladdin's cave of treasures from candles to herbs to handcrafted oils to statues to books to tarot decks.

Wicca Moon also has a feeling of being a hub of the community. While I was there, people were popping in and out to buy things, but also just to say hello and chat. This is just what a witchcraft shop should be like.

The people who came along to listen to me reading the first two chapters from my book where all shop regulars. It was lovely to meet them and everyone was so welcoming to me. We sat around the table in the cosy little room at the back of the shop and, after I'd done my official stuff, we all stayed and chatted for quite some time. It was a delightful afternoon. In the photo to the left you can see copies of my books on the table, along with a lit candle and one of Wicca Moon's own magical dolls.

While I was at the shop I picked up the latest Wicca Moon Wheel of the Year ritual kit, for Autumn Equinox or Mabon. It is full of enticing goodies - many of which are handmade. You can see the contents of the box in the photo to the right.

I've been using this series of Wheel of the Year Ritual kits since the start of the year and loving them. You can see a review of one of the earlier ones here and I'll be blogging about the Mabon kit before the Autumn Equinox. I also bought a copy of the Wicca Moon Tarot deck. Although I'm a big collector of tarot cards, I had actually recently decided I wasn't going to buy any more for a while as I am a bit skint at the moment. However, I was so enamoured of this set - which is exclusive to Wicca Moon and designed by Shirlee and a local artist - that I just had to get it. Again, I will be reviewing it on A Bad Witch's Blog, but you can see it on the shops website.

Shirlee also gave me a gift to take home for my cats, Tommy and Tuppence. This was a handmade catnip toy, which Tommy and Tuppence absolutely love. It does smell very strongly of catnip - much more potent than anything you will buy at a regular pet shop!

Climbing Moss

Eltham is not all Art Deco Palaces and picturesque roads, it’s mostly a shabby 1970’s throw-back High Street, with rude school kids and people who stare at you. But while taking a break from the Capital Ring Walk through this part of London the other week (in search of Coffee, of course). We did discover one gem, filled with gems in this strange part of South London.

Having detoured off the marked path of The Capital Ring Section 2 we took some time to seek out a shop, Wicca Moon and boy are we glad we did.

While checking the route prior to under taking the next section of the walk on Google Maps, we noticed Wicca Moon Crystal Shop and so as we were nearby we turned off the high street with its Wimpy Bar, Charity Shops and dodgy electronics shops and walked for a couple hundred metres along Well Hall Rd. We had the dog with us so we weren’t even sure if we would be welcomed, but upon asking the two ladies welcomed us in gladly and we discovered one of those little magical shops – in many ways.

Wicca Moon is a treasure trove of crystals, tarot cards, prayer bowls and everything you would expect from a (for lack of a better word) New Age Shop. Now the thing with these ‘Mystic shops’ is you always get the feeling of ‘If you need to ask, then you’re in the wrong place’. But from the moment we entered the ladies were there to help as well as talk to the dog – actually asking how old she was and where she had been today – not us, the dog! She’s pretty shy and didn’t speak up, so we answered on her behalf.

Then we asked about some crystals, feeling encouraged and a question about which stone is good for this ailment and what for that, got a unanimous (well two voices) response and a quick shuffle out from behind the counter to show us and also not just to the trays of small crystals, but to the shelf and some pre-owned and cleansed versions too, meaning we got a nice, bigger stone, for less than we would expect to pay. In fact there were a number of ‘pre-owned’ items available, all cleansed Cards and ornaments, necklaces and more. and purified of their previous owners ready for new users.

In addition to the shop goods they offer services, readings, healing therapies and Workshops, from Reiki to Meditation, but we stuck to the crystals and went to pay for our selection, including a few picks from the bucket as well as one of the nice size Selenite wands, (we have not managed to find any over 5cm on Etsy or elsewhere). Our purchases were wrapped and a free pack of incense was slipped in too.

It’s these little touches that make a place memorable and somewhere we must return to, if only it wasn’t at the backend of far, far away!

Oh and they even recommended the only decent coffee shop in Eltham too!

Well there we go another magical find and something a bit different from coffee shop reviews and one to try if you find yourself in deepest, darkest Eltham!

Wicca moon eltham

This is the tarot deck I've been using for the past month. It is the Wicca Moon Tarot and I bought a copy when I visited the lovely pagan shop in Eltham run by Shirlee Moon last month.

Shirlee is the creator of the deck and in the introduction to the book that comes with it she says:

As a reader of tarot for decades it has always been in my mind to create my own deck. My friends and family inspired me to create the Wicca Moon Tarot. I wanted a magickal deck that revealed the magick and mystery as each card was turned. The imagery and symbols immediately open your own intuitive and psychic self.
These cards are so much more than the tarot. You will find inside runes, ogham, seasons, timings, numerology, astrology, elements, energies and deities. The cat that appears throughout the deck is my rescued pet Parsley Pickle.

Several things are unusual about this deck. For a start, it depicts real members of the south-east London magical community. The Fool is represented as The Digging Man, a shamanic double of local author Jack Gale. Shirlee herself can be found in the role of the High Priestess. The description for each card explains who they are, so no need to guess.

As Shirlee says, each card contains a huge amount of symbolism that goes beyond basic tarot, including runes, ogham and astrology. I've been finding this fascinating and it has increased my knowledge of these other divination systems as I use the deck.

The most intriguing aspect of The Wicca Moon Tarot is that the Kings and Queens are depicted together on single cards. Shirlee explains: "I had a ta-daaaa moment. Originally they were going to be called Lords and Ladies, but I thought this would be too complicated. I put them together as a way to bring their elemental energies into balance. "

I've found this works well in readings. It also ties in with the Wiccan view that magic works best when male and female energies are equally balanced.

The artwork is, of course, a vital aspect of any deck. Sandra Hallisbee's pictures are lovely - they really bring Shirlee's vision to life and are full of the depth of meaning that makes tarot reading a joy.

She possessed incredible magical powers and was known for her ability to manipulate and control events to get what she desired. Medea's story gained notoriety through the Greek tragedian Euripides, who wrote a play named after her. In this play, Medea infamously murders her own children to exact revenge on her unfaithful husband, Jason.

Her cunning and ruthless nature solidified her as one of the most powerful and feared witches of antiquity. Another legendary witch is Morgan le Fay, a prominent figure in Arthurian legends. Morgan le Fay was often depicted as the half-sister or cousin of King Arthur and is known for her enchanting beauty and extraordinary magical abilities. Her character evolved over time, transforming from a benevolent healer to a malicious sorceress. Morgan le Fay is believed to have used her powers to shape events and manipulate individuals for her own gain. She personifies the complexity and mystique of a powerful, dark witch in Arthurian mythology. Moving further in history, we encounter the notorious figure of Anne Boleyn. While most commonly known as the second wife of King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn was also rumored to be a witch. Her intelligence, wit, and influence over the King led many to believe that she must have employed some form of witchcraft. These rumors were used against her during her trial for treason and adultery, ultimately leading to her execution. Whether or not Anne Boleyn was truly a witch, her story demonstrates how the perception of powerful women was weaponized against them. In more recent times, we have the figure of Aleister Crowley, an influential occultist and ceremonial magician. Although not technically a witch, Crowley's impact on contemporary occultism cannot be overlooked. He developed and popularized various magical practices that continue to be influential today. Crowley's legacy as a controversial and powerful figure in the occult world is an example of how witchcraft and magic have evolved and adapted over time. While the historical accuracy of these tales may be disputed, the allure of powerful witches throughout history remains undeniable. Their stories not only entertain and mesmerize but also serve as a testament to the enduring fascination with magic and the mystic. These witches, whether real or mythical, continue to captivate our imaginations and remind us of the enduring power and significance of witchcraft in human history..
