Mister Magic is a jazz funk song by Grover Washington Jr., which was released in 1974. It was the title track of his fifth studio album and became one of his most successful songs. The main idea of "Mister Magic" is the captivating magic of the saxophone and the soulful groove it creates. Grover Washington Jr. was a renowned saxophonist and a significant figure in the jazz fusion movement of the 1970s.
Mister Magic
Pure dark magic from Grover Washington – a record that was a megahit back in the 70s, but which still sounds amazing many decades later! There's a sound here that's completely sublime – and the album is to Grover's career what the first 2 CTI sets by Bob James were to his – a stretched-out, masterpiece of sublime jazzy energy – served up with a really spacious sound overall! Grover's sharp-edged sax is at the lead of the set – but the album's also awash in electric piano work from Bob James – and backings that are as lean, clean, and soulful as the best on CTI from the time. Titles include the killer "Black Frost" – a track that we never tire of – plus the hit "Mister Magic", and the cuts "Earth Tones" and "Passion Flower". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good
- Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
- May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
- May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
- May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
- This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.
Additional Marks & Notes
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Reviews for "The Smooth Jazz Revolution: Grover Washington Jr.'s Role"
1. Emily - ★★☆☆☆
I didn't enjoy "Mister Magic" by Grover Washington. While the saxophone playing was technically proficient, I found the overall sound to be repetitive and lacking in creativity. The melodies were forgettable, and the album failed to evoke any emotional response from me. I was hoping for more depth and complexity in the music, but it felt too one-dimensional for my taste. Overall, I found the album to be underwhelming and not something I would choose to listen to again.
2. Michael - ★★☆☆☆
"Mister Magic" by Grover Washington left me disappointed. The songs lacked variety and seemed to blend into each other, making the album feel monotonous. While Washington's saxophone playing was skillful, it didn't make up for the lack of innovation and originality in the compositions. I was expecting more memorable melodies and distinctive arrangements, but unfortunately, I found myself losing interest as the album progressed. Overall, it didn't leave a lasting impression on me and I would not recommend it to others looking for a more dynamic and engaging jazz experience.
3. Sarah - ★☆☆☆☆
I found "Mister Magic" by Grover Washington to be a tedious and unexciting listen. The album lacked energy and failed to captivate me. The saxophone solos felt repetitive and lacked the imaginative spark that I associate with great jazz music. The overall production also felt dated, lacking the crispness and clarity that could have elevated the listening experience. I was left feeling uninspired and unimpressed with this album. It's definitely not one that I would recommend to others looking to explore jazz music.
