1974 cadillac talisman

While it seems weird, I had a conversation on the salt yesterday with some pals and the topic of Cadillacs came up. We all agreed that the only thing you need to do with a Caddy from the middle 1960s right on through the middle 1970s to make it look really cool is put it on air bags and drop the thing a couple of inches. Their sheer size lends them to look great while scraping the ground. I couldn’t really get that idea out of my head and I started looking up period videos of the boulevard bruisers and it led me to this 1970 Lincoln vs 1974 Cadillac battle.

Let’s be fair, neither of these cars are fast although the 1970 Lincoln would likely look like a Bugatti Veyron when it came to an acceleration contest but these cars were not about speed. You are going to see the pinnacles of luxury for their respective time period. The Lincoln Continental was redesigned for 1970. It was the first time that the car had been changed significantly since 1961 and people liked the changes. Expensive and targeted at the wealthy, the car had all the stuff that people with cashola back then wanted. A 127-inch wheelbase, hidden headlights, an interior that you could get lost in, and a massive presence whether sitting still or driving down the road. The thing had 365hp and as we all know, those numbers fell through the floor in the ensuing years.

The 1974 Cadillac Talisman was a gargantuan car. Riding on a 133-inch wheelbase and extending in both directions several feet in both directions. It had every available option that Cadillac offered and the inside of the thing was a crushed velour palace. Powered by a 205hp engine that made 365 lb/ft of torque, there’s no way in hell it could run with the Lincoln but in terms of ridiculous luxury, it has the Linc beat hands down. When you watch the Cadillac commercial you’ll see just how freaking huge the car was. Over the three years that the car was sold, Cadillac made about 4,300 of them. People believe that there are less than 100 left. The cost? $13,200 in 1974 dollars or about $70k today.

So there you have it. Which do you choose?

The easiest way to ID most 1974 models is by looking, again, at the front grille. This year, on the DeVille, Calais and Fleetwood cars (except for the Eldorado and Seville models), there are four rows of sixteen, almost square openings above the front bumper, and an additional two rows of three openings each side of the license plate holder.

Badges and nameplates

Some models in the range have the traditional Cadillac wreath and crest emblem in the center of the front hood and rear deck lid (e.g. Fleetwood 75).

Others have the distinctive, stand-up wreath and crest in front (e.g. Fleetwood Eldorado coupe, Custom Cabriolet coupe and the Fleetwood Eldorado convertible).

The Sedan de Ville, Coupe de Ville and Calais models feature the regular Cadillac "V" and crest emblems on the front hood and rear deck lid.

Custom editions in the DeVille series have a new, see-through, stand-up crest on the hood, combined with the standard "V" and crest emblem on the trunk lid (e.g. Coupe de Ville d'Elgance and Sedan de Ville d'Elgance); those names appear also in script on the roof sail panel, whether or not a Cabriolet vinyl roof covering is applied.

The Fleetwood Brougham has a wreath and crest affixed flat in the center of the front hood and the name Fleetwood, in script, on the front fenders, just below the mid-body rubbing strip; the name Brougham, also in script, appears on the roof sail-panel, just behind the almost vertical opera lamp.

The bespoke Brougham d'Elgance model has a stand-up wreath and crest on the hood, a padded elk-grain vinyl roof with the name Brougham d'Elgance set in the sail panel, and special turbine-blade wheel discs.

The equally luxurious Fleetwood Talisman also has the a stand-up wreath and crest on the hood, the padded elk-grain vinyl roof with the name Fleetwood Talisman set in the sail panel, and special wheel discs.

For video freaks, here's an original movie commercial I found on You Tube. Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee it will be always viewable here.

(Very) Easy ID

This year, more than half the front clip is taken up by the newly designed front grille, made up of only four rows across and sixteen rows down of large, almost square "egg-crate" openings. The upper grille is flanked on either side by horizontally paired, round headlamps in square housings and vertically paired, wrap-around park and turn signal lamps. Those paired, wrap-around lamps are the dead giveaway for all 1974 cars except for the Eldorado coupe and convertible.

Below the bumper, on each side of the license plate holder, are two more rows of three grille openings. Nowhere on the front clip is the name Cadillac to be seen; you have to guess these are Cadillacs . and THAT's not too hard!

LH: 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood front clip - except Eldorados
RH: special edition DeVille models have stand-up, see-through
crest

Parking, turn-signal and cornering lights make up a block of two distinct units that wrap around the front corners of the car.
It is the easiest way to distinguish a 1974 Cadillac from any other year; in the rear, however, spotting the precise model year
is far from easy because the new rear clip appears for the next three years in a row: 1974, 1975 and 1976

1975 1976

As you can see here, rear clips on 1974, 1975 and 1976 DeVille and Calais models are basically identical, which makes it almost impossible to distinguish
these different year models, when viewed from the rear; the Fleetwood hood and trunk again carried a wreath and crest, whereas the DeVille and Calais cars
sported only the traditional "V" and crest; note the urethane "fillers" in the "crumple zone", behind the vertical bumper ends! These were not very durable

Additional information and photos of the 1974 models and the related sales literature may be found in The (New) Cadillac Database sections entitled " Descriptions and Specifications of Cadillac Cars 1966 - 1975 ", " Cadillac and La Salle Sales Literature 1970-1974 " as well as in the appropriate " Dream cars" section. Further recommended reading includes:

Standard Catalog of Cadillac, 1903-2000 edited by James T. Lenzke, 2000, published by Krause Publications, Inc., 700 E. State Street, Iola, WI 54990 [ISBN #0-87341-925-1, Library of Congress #91-61301]. An updated version covering Cadillacs through 2005 was edited by John Gunnell that year.

Images below are from factory merchandising brochures for that year. The various models are shown in the same order they appear in the white-covered prestige brochure for 1974, as well as the two other, smaller catalogs entitled Cadillac 1974 and Any Way you Look at it.

According to the prestige product brochure, the 1974 Cadillac is More than ever. America's Number One Luxury Car. Buyers had a choice among sixteen different models (that number includes the special, custom editions). There were the luxurious Fleetwood Brougham sedan, the custom Brougham d'Elgance, the custom Fleetwood Talisman, the flagship Fleetwood 75 sedan and limousine, the Eldorado Coupe, the Custom Cabriolet and the Convertible, the family oriented Sedan de Ville and the ever popular Coupe de Ville, the special Coupe de Ville d'Elgance, Sedan de Ville d'Elgance, the Coupe de Ville Cabriolet and Coupe de Ville d'Elgance with Cabriolet Roof. At the low end of the price range were, again the Calais coupe and Calais sedan.

Cadillac Limousines

Space and stature always symbolized Cadillac's Fleetwood limousine models, the only American-made car to be designed and built as such;
the sedan version could accommodate up to nine persons including the driver, three of which occupied the large, fold-up auxiliary seats with
comfortable seat backs; appointments were always luxurious, as seen in the interior view, right, trimmed in dark blue Medici velour;
other options included gray Potomac cord, or Morocco cloth, being an ornate matelass material available in black or medium saddle. Leather
bolsters and trim were still available but soon would be giving way to vinyl; traditionally, the seating in the driver's compartment was black
leather; an electrically-operated glass partition separated driver and passengers in the formal version; a landau top could be
ordered, giving for more privacy to rear seat occupants; it did away with the quarter window and was decorated with imitation landau bars.

Vertical "egg-crate" grille openings this year, were far greater in number than the large, square ones in 1973;
this year there were four rows of one hundred-twenty openings above the front bumper and an additional (visible)
two rows of ten identical openings flanking the license plate frame, below the bumper. The
Cadillac name, in script, graced the top RH side of the grille shroud (when facing the car).

The coupe

Here is the Eldorado coupe in Victorian amber; interior upholstery selections, include Mohawk, a three-toned
cloth fabric, shown here in medium saddle, with saddle-colored Meridian fabric bolsters and trim; these two
combinations are available also in black, dark blue, medium jasper, medium gold and terra cotta; or a buyer
may choose from among fourteen different leather tones, as also Medici velour in dark blue, amber or terra cotta

The Custom Cabriolet version features a padded elk grain
roof covering set off by a sheer chrome saddle molding

The convertible

Seen here in Cranberry Firemist, the standard Eldorado convertible interior is trimmed in leather
in dark blue, medium jasper, antique light sandalwood, saddle, gold, terra cotta, scarlet, black and white (shown here);
when ordered in white, six different carpet colors were available to match exterior paint colors

Cadillac offered fifteen new colors this year, including three non-metallic hues (Jasper, Apollo yellow and Conestoga tan);
the car is shown here in Pharaoh Gold Firemist with a gold padded vinyl roof; luxury trim touches include distressed
pecan wood-grain vinyl and a soft pillow design on door panels; the firm vaunted "an impressive new range of colors
and materials for upholstery and trim; Maharajah was a multi-colored pattern materiel and Mardi Gras an
exotic velour; leather interior trim was available in fourteen combinations including gold, as shown.

The new Coupe de Ville is shown here in Persian Lime Firemist with optional white, padded vinyl roof; the trim on this car is the
previously mentioned Maharajah, an ornate, multi-colored material available in dark blue, saddle, gold and terra cotta with matching
leather bolsters and trim; also available was Mardi Gras, a 2-toned striped velour (the first velour offered in a De Ville series
car); full leather trim was also available in any of fourteen shades and combinations

These are factory publicity postcards

DeVille Special Editions

This photo shows the special Coupe de Ville d'Elgance
with its custom Cabriolet roof; it features a Cadillac crest

and D'Elegance script nameplate on the sail panel

These specially trimmed interiors are available in both the Sedan de Ville d'Elgance and Coupe de Ville d'Elgance;
identified by a new, stand-up, see-through crest (below, far right) and accent striping on the hood, sides and rear deck, these
special editions also have storage pockets on the front seat backs, deep pile carpets and matching, protective floor mats; the
D'Elegance name appears in script on the roof sail panel, whether or not a Cabriolet vinyl roof covering is applied. The
material shown here is striped, 2-tone Mardi Gras velour (the first velour offered on DeVille models) it is matched with
leather; apart from the shades shown here (white on black and medium amber), also available were terra cotta and dark blue

De luxe padded door panels and quarter panels (on the coupe) further
set off the d'Elgance interiors; the Cabriolet roof available on the
Coupe de Ville d'Elgance features a chrome saddle molding; both

models have the see-through, stand-up crest (far right)

The Sedan

Calais bodies are strikingly similar to the Sedan de Ville and Coupe de Ville; only the Calais nameplate
on the rear fenders and the less expensive interior trim [with vinyl areas instead of leather] allow the casual
observer to distinguish between the entry-level Cadillacs and the more luxurious DeVilles and Fleetwoods

The Coupe

Th Calais sedan [top] is shown in Canyon amber; the coupe [above] is painted Apollo yellow; the same ornate
Mimosa cloth trim in black, dark blue, medium jasper (shown) and medium gold is used for both examples;
also available was expanded vinyl to give that luxurious look; it was available in antique medium saddle or black

Reviews for "The Enigmatic Closet of Texas: Revealing its Longevity Powers"

1. John Doe - 1 star
I had high hopes for "Magic Closet Longview Texas" after hearing rave reviews from friends, but I was sorely disappointed. The story felt unoriginal and predictable, with flat characters that lacked depth. The writing style was also subpar, with grammatical errors and awkward sentence structures that made it hard to fully engage with the narrative. Overall, I found the book to be a tedious read that did not live up to the hype.
2. Jane Smith - 2 stars
While "Magic Closet Longview Texas" had an interesting premise, I found it to be poorly executed. The pacing was uneven, with long stretches of boredom followed by rushed, disjointed plot points. The protagonist was unlikeable and made decisions that were illogical and frustrating. Additionally, the dialogue often felt forced and unrealistic, further detracting from my enjoyment of the book. Overall, I cannot recommend "Magic Closet Longview Texas" as it failed to meet my expectations.
3. Mark Johnson - 2 stars
"Magic Closet Longview Texas" had the potential to be a captivating and imaginative tale, but it fell short in many aspects. The world-building was lacking, leaving me with more questions than answers about the magical elements of the story. The character development was also weak, with the main character feeling one-dimensional and the supporting cast being forgettable. The pacing was slow, dragging the narrative and making it difficult to maintain interest. Overall, I found "Magic Closet Longview Texas" to be a disappointing read that did not live up to its promise.
4. Sarah Thompson - 1 star
I found "Magic Closet Longview Texas" to be incredibly dull and uneventful. The plot was full of cliches and lacked any real surprises or twists. The writing style was dry and unimaginative, failing to transport me into the magical world the author attempted to create. The pacing was slow, making it a struggle to stay engaged and finish the book. Overall, I was thoroughly unimpressed with "Magic Closet Longview Texas" and would not recommend it to others seeking an exciting and well-crafted story.
