So to those watching it can be frustrating to see how this series opens up roads to great storytelling possibilities only to take the road of least resistance. Thus my greatest advice to any viewer is to not let yourself be fooled into thinking that this show will have a dynamic shift into a greater story arc. Throughout it’s run this is a simple story with simple objectives. Thus if you can come to accept that then you can enjoy what Little Witch Academia has to offer. Again, this really is a good show and has the kind of fun sensibility that very few anime can pull off. It’s a show that wouldn’t look out of place if put in a Saturday morning cartoon block and for those that woke up on mornings to tune into these kinds of shows as kids it will certainly hit that sentimental spot. If you aren’t part of that demographic then this may be a harder sell as I could see others get tired of the inconsequential episodic stories and a general lack of character development. Some characters get small changes but for the most part have simple characterisation. Akko in particular tends to have sporadic development as she tends to waver between growing as a person and then falling into her old ways.

There are also references galore throughout the series from callouts to old cartoons Hanna Barbara, Disney, Dexters lab to previous trigger works and to even oddballs like 1984, Pawn Stars, Hellboy and Dinotopia. Akko is an untalented chosen one protagonist, but unlike other anime heroes who triumphed by sheer will and shouting corny speeches, she s largely un-obnoxious.

I'm not an anime fan, but I started the series because of the word of mouth here. And I found Little Witch Academia to be a breath of fresh air compared to other animes (I started My Hero Academia by mistake, I barely made through the first episode). It wasn't super subversive like One Punch Man, but it didn't lean too much on tropes. Even when there were tropes present, Little Witch Academia tuned them or deviated from them. Things but mainly people weren't as they were seen. And I adored the richness of Little Witch Academia's characters.

Akko is an untalented chosen one protagonist, but unlike other anime heroes who triumphed by sheer will and shouting corny speeches, she's largely un-obnoxious.

Her two friends are good at their own things but not in a plot-convenient way, the dynamic of the trio was interesting (Sucy's episode was a highlight). One of the coolest thing of their school was they aren't the only Harry-Ron-Hermione group, there are other trios out there doing their own things. Sometimes they all go on adventures, sometimes they don't.

Look at Diana Malfoy right here:

Highborn and smug, she likes to walk around correcting people with Crabbe and Goyle on her tail. But she recognizes talents and merits when she sees them (mostly). She will drop her petty bullshit when stuff gets serious. One of her lackey is a nerd.

Asshole potential love interest waiting to be converted to the just cause was a waste of time though.

Main story doesn't seem to be prime evil ready to destroy the world just because, which was nice, but I found the side-stories more interesting. Give it a watch, it's on Netflix in my region, probably in yours too.
