Magic Pillowcase Tutorial

Hi there Ribbon Retreat readers! It’s Michaela from Covered in Mod Podge back again. Today, I’m sharing a tutorial for a Magic Pillowcase that goes great with the Ruffled Strip Quilt from a couple weeks back!

Between the second and third grade, my family moved from Northern to Southern California. I did not take the move well, at all. In attempts to get me plugged in to my new community, my mom signed me up for dance, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, basketball, and sewing lessons.

Of all things, my mom decided that sewing lessons should be apart of the making me feel like I fit in. I took them for about a year. Anyone else wondering about how this helped with the fitting in thing? It sure didn’t! Girl Scouts saved me. I put away my sewing machine and never looked back.

That is, until I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. They wanted me to pay how much for a blanket I could make myself. I am so glad that I pulled that sewing machine out. It’s allowed me to develop a wonderful hobby and make some great things for my little girl. I am so proud to have a momma made quilt headed to her big girl bed.

What’s all this have to do with today’s tutorial? Well I’m reaching back to a lesson learned in the third grade. It’s called the Magic Pillowcase. What makes this pillowcase magic is that all of the seams are encased. No finishing seams and no worrying about fraying through the multitude of washes that bedding requires.

You Need:
3/4 yd main fabric (I used Essential Dots by Moda in Peony)
1/4 yd cuff fabric (I used Essential Dots by Moda in White/Peony)
2 inches trim fabric (I used Dottie by Moda in Teal)
Rotary cutter, ruler, and self healing mat
Sewing machine and thread

Prewash and iron your fabric. Trim off selvedges to make all the fabrics the same widths.

Fold your cuff fabric in half, wrong sides together. Press.
Repeat for your two inch strip.

Unfold the cuff fabric and place it, right side up, on a clean work surface.

Place your main fabric on top of the cuff fabric.

Place the trim fabric on top of the main fabric. Make sure all three edges are lined up.

Grab the bottom of your main fabric and roll it up until it is about four inches from the top.

Take the bottom of the cuff fabric and fold it up over the roll. Line up the bottom of the cuff fabric with all the other edges. Pin all layers.

Now sew along that edge (with all four edges) with a presser foot seam allowance. You’ll create a tube.
Pull the tube right side out.

Fold the fabric in half, like a pillowcase. Trim your edges to make sure everything is even.

Now, you’ll encase the side and bottom seams using French Seams.
Start by folding your fabric so it looks like a pillow case, wrong sides together. Pin along the raw side and the bottom and sew using a scant 1/4 inch seam allowance (that’s fancy speak for a little less than 1/4 inch).

Turn the pillowcase wrong side out. Press well. Then, sew along the bottom and the once raw edge using a presser seam allowance. This will encase your seam. Now you’ve made a French Seam.

Turn your pillowcase right side out, slip in a pillow, and you’re all set!

Since my little one hasn’t quite moved up to her toddler bed yet,
this pillowcase is currently serving as a great reading nook cushion.

Thank you Michaela! What a great companion to your little girlee’s new quilt. This pillowcase is definitely magic and looks splendid! I love how quickly it is to create and how great the finished product is! I am so glad your mom put you in sewing in the 3rd grade and that you had a little girlee that you helped you find your love for sewing again! 🙂

HOW TO MAKE A BURRITO METHOD PILLOW CASE

As I was doing a little bit of research, I was surprised to find that there are quite a few different names that these simple pillowcases go by.

Sometimes they're called a burrito, sausage or a hot dog pillow case. Some people call them magic pillowcases. Still others call them rolled or tube pillowcases.

As far as I can tell they're all the same thing and they're SO easy to make!

Let's get started with this easy tutorial!

Lay out a protective covering, such as a plastic tablecloth or old sheet, to avoid any accidental stains or damage to your surface. 3. Choose your design.

FABRIC NEEDED FOR A MAGIC PILLOW CASE

  • 2" X width of fabric (42")
  • 9" X width of fabric (42")
  • 27" X width of fabric (42")

OTHER USEFUL TOOLS AND SUPPLIES

  • Cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing scissors
  • Sewing machine

I love these cute little frogs! Such a fun fabric!
When the fabric comes off the bolt it is folded. Leave it like this and cut your measurements off of it.

Then place your pieces on top of each other while the fabric is still folded. They will most likely not be exactly the same length.

So trim off the selvage edge to make them all even.

Fold and press your 2" piece in half lengthwise.

Lay down your 9" piece face up. On top of it place your main fabric (the 27" piece) face up.

Then place your 2" folded piece on top with the opening at the top. Make sure to line up your fabric at the top.

Now roll up the 27" piece like shown above.

Now fold the bottom piece up over the top.

Make sure that all of your pieces are lined up along the top edge. Pin in place and stitch along the top of the rolled up fabric.

This is your first seam. I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Now turn your tube right side out, pulling your fabric through the open short edges.

and this is what it will look like.

Fold your pillowcase in half, with right sides together. Now it's time to sew the side seams. Sew along the side and bottom of the pillowcase.

These are your second and third seams. Turn it right side out and you're done!

Here's another finished pillowcase.

Magic pillowcase instructions

Decide whether you want to create a specific pattern, a name or quote, or simply let your creativity flow. Consider the colors and materials you have available to make your design come to life. 4. Start designing. Use your fabric markers or fabric paint to draw your design directly onto the pillowcase. If you are using fabric paint, follow the instructions on the packaging for proper application and drying time. 5. Add extra embellishments. If you have chosen additional embellishments, like ribbons or iron-on patches, now is the time to attach them. Be sure to follow the instructions provided with these materials for best results. 6. Let it dry. Once you have completed your design and added any additional embellishments, allow your magic pillowcase to dry fully. This may take several hours or overnight, depending on the type of paint or markers used. 7. Test for durability. Before using your magic pillowcase, test the design for durability. Ensure the colors do not bleed or rub off onto other fabrics by gently rubbing a small, inconspicuous area. If the design passes the test, it is ready to use! 8. Enjoy your magical creation. Now that your magic pillowcase is complete and dry, place it on your pillow and enjoy the unique design you have created. It's a great way to add a personalized touch to your bedroom decor or make a thoughtful gift for someone special. Remember, the magic of the pillowcase lies in the endless possibilities for creativity and self-expression. Have fun with the process and let your imagination soar as you create your own magical masterpiece!.
