One of the latest buzzwords, you will have likely heard the phrases “clean beauty”, and in particular, “clean cosmetics” thrown around the skin and makeup space.

While the term is ambiguous, unregulated and there’s a lot of greenwashing going on in the industry, it is defined by a move to non-toxic products that are formulated without potentially harmful chemicals as well as those that are ethically sourced and kinder to the environment.

Switching up your traditional base product to a mineral foundation is one way to transform your makeup routine in line with these skin and planet-friendly practices.

What are the benefits of mineral foundations?

Mineral foundations are a natural alternative to the traditional building block in your collection. They are created free from fillers or nasties and, while many come in powdered form, you will find the ingredient list doesn’t include the likes of talc, preservatives, alcohol or fragrances.

For this reason, they tend to be irritant-free for sensitive skin types, although they can work for most types. Those with combination or oily complexions will appreciate the mattifying benefits of powder, while acne-prone skin can be content in the knowledge that they are non-comedogenic.

Dermatologist Dr Emma Craythorne explains, “[Mineral foundations] are make-up that’s typically in powder form and contain ingredients such as talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron oxide. Often with many of the formulations there is no need to include additional preservatives or stabilisers and therefore there is last chance of a reaction. I typically recommend them for people with rosacea, particularly the oilier rosacea group or skin sensitive patients”.

These mineral foundations give a natural finish that buildable without overloading or feeling heavy on the skin. But it is worth noting as explained by Dr Craythorne “as many of them are powders, if you are someone with a dry skin type or a dry rosacea then it can sit on the skin with rather a caked, dry and dull look”. In this case, look to the liquid textures.

How do you apply a mineral foundation?

Maria Xavier Jackson – Education & Events Manager reveals her top tips:
  • Place a SMALL amount of foundation in the lid. Then Swirl, Tap and Buff.
  • Swirl in the cap, until it disappears into the brush (There should be no ‘mineral cloud’ while doing this. If there is, you have used to much product)
  • Tap away the excess
  • Buff onto your skin in circular motions. This activates the minerals and converts them from a powder to a cream. Do this for approximately 2 minutes.
  • Repeat until you have achieved the coverage you want
  • Start buffing on to the cheek area. This is where most of us, tend to have discolouration on the skin.
  • A big fluffy brush will give a light to medium coverage and the most even distribution of the product and a denser brush will give a medium to full coverage.
  • A mineral foundation tends to look better, as the day progresses, as the minerals warm on the skin, and gives it a healthy glow.

Reviews for "Magic minerals foundation: An all-in-one solution for a busy lifestyle"

1. Sarah - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the Magic Minerals foundation. It didn't provide the coverage it claimed to and ended up looking cakey on my skin. I have combination skin and it made my oily areas even more shiny, emphasizing my pores. It also clung to dry patches, making them even more noticeable. I expected more from a foundation that claims to have magic minerals and provide a flawless finish. Definitely not worth the money.
2. Mark - 1 star - I regret purchasing the Magic Minerals foundation. It did not live up to its claims at all. The shade range is limited, and the one I chose ended up being too orange for my skin tone. The formula felt heavy and greasy on my face, even after setting it with powder. It did not last long, and I noticed it oxidizing throughout the day, leaving me with an unnatural color. I would not recommend this foundation to anyone.
3. Emily - 2 stars - The Magic Minerals foundation was a huge letdown for me. I have sensitive skin, and this foundation caused me to break out in small bumps and redness. It did not provide good coverage for my acne scars and blemishes, and I ended up having to use a lot of concealer on top. The texture of the foundation was also strange, it felt grainy and didn't blend well into my skin. Overall, I had a negative experience with this product and will not be repurchasing it.
4. David - 1 star - I had high hopes for the Magic Minerals foundation, but it fell short in every aspect. The shade I picked looked completely different once applied, making me look washed out and ghostly. The formula settled into my fine lines and creases, making me appear older than I am. It also oxidized throughout the day, turning me into an oompa-loompa. I would not recommend this foundation and advise others to look for better options in the market.
5. Jennifer - 2 stars - The Magic Minerals foundation did not live up to its name for me. It provided minimal coverage and did not hide my redness or acne scars. The formula felt heavy and suffocating on my skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It also transferred easily onto clothing and left stains. I was disappointed with the overall performance and will be returning this product.
