Biography [ ]

Princess Emeraude is the sovereign ruler of Cephiro and a Goddess-like figure whom all the inhabitants pray to for peace, prosperity, and protection. She is also the first person to summon Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji to the mystical, otherworldly realm of Cephiro, to become the legendary Magic Knights.

Little else is revealed concerning her nature until the climax of the first series, although she is highly loved by her subjects.

In the anime it is revealed that she was once a noblewoman of Cephiro, and had later used her power as the Pillar to prevent her younger brother Ferio from being punished for stealing something from her. He had forgotten she was his sister because, at his own request, she had used her magic to help him forget about her so he would not miss her or feel sorrow, and asked that she in turn forget him, so that she could focus her thoughts and prayers only on Cephiro. In the manga series, she is Ferio's older sister as well, but there is no mention of Ferio stealing something from her, and he does remember that she is his sister; in fact, he left the palace on his own will.

High Priest Zagato

Zagato is Princess Emeraude's High Priest. He kidnaps Emeraude and traps her so that she can no longer pray for peace in Cephiro, therefore Cephiro begins to crumble. Zagato's true intentions with capturing Emeraude are unknown until the end of the season. His intentions aren't what they seem.

Alcione is a loyal follower of Zagato. She is a sorceress who was once a student of Clef. She uses ice magic as her attack. She is deeply in love with Zagato which is why she tries so hard to defeat the Magic Knights.

Ascot uses magic to summon beasts to fight for him. His beasts are his best friends and he cries whenever they are killed. Ascot is very small, like a little kid. He floats on a rock to get around. He tried a few times to have his beasts kill the Magic Knights but they always failed. Later Umi told Ascot that using his friends to fight was wrong, because they were always killed. Ascot was convinced that working for Zagato was wrong and tried to stop Caldina from fighting the Magic Knights, until she finally realized that she didn't have to serve him anymore.

Caldina is a dancer and illusionist. She is a good acrobat and uses bells on her cloths to hypnotize people to follow her orders. She knows she has a great body and loves to show it off. She also will do anything for money and is a good gambler. Her best friend is Ascot and she treats him like a little brother. She tried a few times to kill the Magic Knights, but failed. On her last try, Fuu convinced her that no amount of money was worth the risk of losing her own life so Caldina decided to stop serving Zagato and her and Ascot left.

Innova is Zagato's loyalist follower. He knows Zagato's intentions, but he still serves him. Innova uses magic and can also disguise himself as a normal person. He once captured Ferio by disguising himself as a young woman in distress. Even the Magic Knights fell for his disguise. He then tried to kill the Magic Knights in Windam's shrine, but of course he was beaten. Later it is revealed that Innouva was a gift given to Zagato by Emeraude and his true form is that of a wolf-type creature that is very powerful. Sadly, he is destroyed by the Magic Knights.

Lafarga was the captain of the guards protecting Princess Emeraude. He is the best swordsmen in Cephero. He has a powerful sword that sends air pressure when he swings it, splitting the ground and shattering rocks. When Zagato kidnapped Emeraude Lafarga wasn't strong enough to stop him. Zagato then put him under a spell so he would only follow his orders. When Zagato sent Lafarga to kill the Magic Knights, Lafarga got into a battle with Hikaru. Hikaru was asking why he was helping Zagato and why he wouldn't help Emeraude. After hearing the princess's name, Lafarga had a series of flashbacks of when Zagato kidnapped Emeraude. Soon Lafarga came out of the spell that was cast on him and left to help save Princess Emeraude.

I found the villains in Magic Knight Rayearth to be rather underwhelming. They lacked the complexity and development that I typically enjoy in antagonistic characters. The main villain, Zagato, felt like a generic and predictable antagonist with little depth or nuance. His minions were equally uninspiring, failing to leave a lasting impression. I was hoping for more compelling adversaries that would challenge the main characters and provide engaging conflicts, but unfortunately, the villains in Magic Knight Rayearth fell short of my expectations.

The main antagonist, Zagato, had potential to be a formidable opponent, but his motives and backstory were not explored enough to make him truly compelling. The various antagonists encountered throughout the series felt like generic villains of the week, lacking the depth and complexity I usually find engaging. Overall, I wished for more well-rounded and memorable villains in the show, but unfortunately, Magic Knight Rayearth failed to deliver in this aspect.
