The Creatures From the Sandwich Shop

Quiznos’ singing rodent The spot: A small, furry creature, wearing a bowler hat, levitates as he sings an ode to Quiznos subs. Nearby, another flying creature wears an 18 th century seafaring hat, and strums on an acoustic guitar. Song lyrics: “We love the subs! ‘Cuz they are good to us. The Quiznos subs. They are tasty, they are crunchy, they are warm because they toast them. They got a pepper bar!” Never have I gotten so much mail on a single ad. I gather that you seek an explanation. And with great urgency. Many of you sound disturbed—as though your lives will be placed on hold until you’ve come to terms with these haunting creatures. I wish I could help. But what can be said? I mean, it’s a screeching, levitating prosimian in a bowler hat. You’ll find no easy answers here, people. What I can tell you is this:

These characters come from a man named Joel Veitch, who makes television shows for Britain’s Channel 4 * (according to his Web site, www.rathergood.com). On his site, you can see these creatures in a January 2003 video clip, in which they sing about loving the moon, marmots, cheese, dirigibles, and several other nouns. The clip, which calls the characters “spongmonkeys,” seems pretty clearly the basis for the Quiznos ad. (Quiznos says a guy from their ad firm received the clip in an e-mail from a friend and decided it was perfect for a new campaign.)

According to Trey Hall, the chief marketing officer, Quiznos gets loads of mail on these ads. He says it breaks into three categories: 1) “What are these creatures?”; 2) “You gotta be kidding”; and 3) “This is genius advertising!” Since that’s pretty much the breakdown in my mailbag, too, I’ll take these one by one.

In the Subway post from yesterday, a commenter mentioned that Quiznos had/has a rat for a mascot. Heh. Well, I dunno. There was the Quiznos in the complex at 19-23 St. Mark's . once home to the Dom, the Electric Circus, etc. (No need to get into that!) Anyway, the St. Mark's Quiznos closed in 2007. I've never been to a Quiznos. and have no idea what their mascot is. So I actually looked it up. and unless this is some wacky spoof, then Quiznos really did have a rat for a mascot. one with crazy-ass eyes and a bowler hat. accompanied by something with a guitar and pirate hat.

Thanks, Alex. I just did a search for spongemonkeys -- wow, apparently I missed this moment of pop culture advertising.

Slate did a piece on them:

The fellow in Slate gave the ads an A. I'll go with the F.

It was done by a guy named Joel who lives in England. It used to be just a cute little website he did that few knew about. Now he has done commercials, has a band, and seems to make a living off of it. Here is the link:

My personal favorite is Iggy Pop's Ocelot Shop:

He also had a great Led Zeppelin Viking Kittens short that he must have received a cease and desist for, since it disappeared off his website years ago. Not that you can't find it other places now:

i remember that quiznos on st. marks. it was slapped with numerous DOH violations and eventually shuttered. i think they had a rat problem, so quite ironic.

i, too, give the ad an F. who wants to think about deranged rats nibbling on your sandwich?

on another note, i now have a craving for a quizno's sub!

but seriously, i hope it's a spoof. otherwise what sort of idiotic ad agency would put together a rat mascot for a food company?

I ate Quiznos twice, the first in Montana, and it was a seriously superior and delicious sandwich. Or maybe I was just really hungry because . well,l I was in Montana and it is a place where you can eat a lot more, those wide open spaces or something. But after that meal, which we ate in the car on the way to some camping trip, my whole family became raving lunatics about how much better Quiznos was than Subway.

The next time I ate was somewhere in NY- wasn't there one on W14th St? Well I can't remember. Anyways, it sucked. Must be the NY water.

Reviews for "Pushing the Boundaries of Cycling with the Magic Cycle Cruiser Pro"

- Jake - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the Magic cycle cruiser pro. The build quality was subpar, with parts coming loose and falling off after just a few rides. The battery life was also a major letdown, as it barely lasted half as long as the advertised duration. The overall performance was lackluster, with the bike struggling on inclines and not providing enough power. I would not recommend this electric bike to anyone looking for a reliable and efficient option.
- Emily - 1 star - I had high hopes for the Magic cycle cruiser pro, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. The bike was incredibly uncomfortable to ride, with a poorly designed seat that caused discomfort even on short rides. The motor also produced a loud and annoying sound, making it highly unpleasant to use. Additionally, the bike had several technical issues, including a faulty display screen and inconsistent speed control. Save your money and look for a different electric bike option.
- Alex - 2 stars - I regret purchasing the Magic cycle cruiser pro. The battery life was extremely disappointing, needing frequent charges and not living up to the advertised range. The overall durability of the bike was also subpar, as the brakes began to fail after just a few months of use. The customer service experience was also lacking, with slow response times and unhelpful representatives. I would not recommend this electric bike to anyone in search of a reliable and long-lasting option.
- Sarah - 3 stars - I had mixed feelings about the Magic cycle cruiser pro. While it did provide a smooth and enjoyable ride, there were several flaws that detracted from the overall experience. The bike's motor had a tendency to overheat, causing the bike to suddenly slow down or stop altogether. The battery life was also shorter than expected, requiring frequent recharges. The overall build quality felt flimsy, with loose handlebars and a wobbly frame. It's an okay electric bike, but there are better options available.
