Reiki and Beyond: Non-Magical Healing Modalities

By admin

It can be tempting to rely solely on healing magic in times of injury or illness. After all, healing spells offer quick relief and are often very effective. However, there are situations where it is best not to use healing magic. Firstly, healing magic should not be used when it is unnecessary or excessive. Minor scratches, bruises, or headaches can be easily treated with rest and natural remedies. Using healing magic for these minor ailments can create a dependency on magic and neglect the body's natural healing abilities.

How Not To Use Healing Magic (Manga)

Isekai is, it seems, very much the flavour of the month when it comes to manga - being reincarnated, summoned or otherwise inserted into a fantasy world seems to have touched on a current zeitgeist, and subsequently we find ourselves with another new entry to the genre, The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic.

3 teens are summoned to a new world to act as heroes for a beleaguered Kingdom - everyman Ken Usato and rising-star school council members, Kazuki Ryusen and Suzune Inukami are whisked away, but the genre is such a trope by this point that all three recognise what's happening when they're enveloped in a magic circle. The knowingness of the whole thing is actually quite charming, and while it's not an entirely fresh angle, it does at least help to ensure the reader feels that their likely exposure to the upcoming tropes is acknowledged.

In keeping with the underdog approach, it's really no surprise that Usato is not apparently destined to become a great warrior like his peers, but instead shows an aptitude for healing magic, a discipline that was, until recently, looked down on. As such, when he's interned with his fellow healers, they're not so much healers as a rag-tag group of complete misfits ruled by the iron fist of "Sister Rose".

The first volume is largely an introduction to the wider conflict and the trio's place within it. The Demon Lord's army is on the move, and Usato must use the time he has to train himself into a battlefield medic - this requires an alarming amount of drill-trailing, making his body tough as nails and pushing his will to the limit. We meet a wider range of supporting characters, from enemy combatants to friendly locals, including one mysterious "Beastkin" girl who shows our hero a calamatous vision of the future.

This allows the book to create a sense of urgency, even if the setting and even largely the characters will be familiar to anyone who has spent time with the isekai before. This really gives us the book's greatest strength and weakness - it isn't particularly different to many isekai on the shelves already, and in fact could very easily slot into a variety of them as a side-story. This means that it's good, but at this point in its story, not particularly stand-out.

While the character designs aren't particularly memorable either, I will say that the art by Kugayama Reki is fantastic - detailed, with plenty of shading, sharp attention to detail and page layouts that are lively and interesting make for a very pleasant read indeed. I don't feel like we know the cast as well as I'd like, and that interest is commendable as it shows that it not only kept my attention but has me wanting more of it.

I've enjoyed the first five chapters offered by the manga, it has a fun energy and plenty to keep you turning the pages - what I'd love to see next is the "big idea" that allows the book to carve its own niche, and I'll be happy to keep reading more to see where it's going.

A solid start to a new isekai journey, but it really needs to reveal some larger ideas to truly stand out.

How to not use healing magic

While spells may provide temporary relief, they do not address underlying health issues or provide long-term solutions. It is crucial to consult a medical professional for serious injuries or chronic conditions. They can offer a more holistic approach to healing and provide the appropriate treatment. Another reason to limit the use of healing magic is to conserve magical energy. Magic is a finite resource, and constantly relying on healing spells can drain one's powers. It is advisable to save magical energy for more critical situations or for the use of other important spells. Furthermore, healing magic should not be used as a means to avoid personal growth or learning from experiences. Pain and discomfort are natural parts of life that can teach valuable lessons. By using healing magic excessively, individuals may miss out on important opportunities for self-reflection and personal development. Lastly, healing magic should not be used to enable harmful behaviors or activities. If someone consistently engages in dangerous actions knowing that they can be easily healed, it may encourage reckless behavior and a disregard for personal safety. In conclusion, while healing magic can be a valuable tool in certain situations, it should not be relied upon for minor ailments, as a replacement for medical care, or as a means to avoid personal growth. It is important to use healing magic responsibly and sparingly in order to preserve one's own magical energy and foster a healthy approach to healing..

1. Emma - ★★☆☆☆
I had high hopes for "How to not use healing magic" as I am a fan of fantasy novels, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. The characters were one-dimensional and lacked depth, making it difficult for me to connect with them. The plot was predictable and followed the typical arc of a chosen hero who overcomes obstacles to save the day. Additionally, the writing style felt amateurish and lacked the descriptive language necessary to immerse the reader in the world. Overall, I found it to be a forgettable and uninspiring read.
2. Jason - ★☆☆☆☆
I was extremely disappointed with "How to not use healing magic". The concept seemed intriguing, but the execution was incredibly flawed. The protagonist was unlikable and made questionable decisions throughout the story. The pacing was erratic, with unnecessary filler scenes that didn't contribute to the overall plot. The magical system was poorly explained, leaving too many unanswered questions. Furthermore, the dialogue felt forced and unnatural, making it difficult to become invested in the interactions between characters. Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a captivating fantasy read.
3. Sarah - ★★☆☆☆
I was initially drawn to "How to not use healing magic" due to the unique premise, but unfortunately, the book failed to fully explore its potential. The world-building was lacking, leaving me with more questions than answers. The character development was shallow, leading to a lack of emotional investment in their journeys. Additionally, the plot felt repetitive and formulaic, making it difficult to stay engaged. While the writing was passable, it lacked the lyrical quality that I typically enjoy in fantasy novels. Overall, I found this book to be average at best and would not recommend it to avid fantasy readers.
