With two new lungs and a few pounds lighter, kicking specialist coach Kim Pace is back on the sideline for the Warrior opening game on Friday, Aug. 26. It was a place he wasn’t sure if he’d ever be back with his lungs rapidly this past spring.

PLAINS — Approximately 4,000 lung transplants occur worldwide per year, 2,000 of them in the U.S. alone. Sixty-nine-year-old Kim Pace, just happens to be one of the lucky ones that received a double lung transplant weeks, if not days before he perished to with Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).

Pace began breathing difficulties in 2015 before being diagnosed with IPF some time later.

IPF is scarring that causes stiffness in the lungs, which makes it difficult to breathe and get oxygen to the bloodstream. Lung damage is often irreversible and gets worse over time, which is what exactly happened to Pace.

Eventually Pace was placed on a donor list at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. From then on, it was a waiting game.

A GoFundMe page was started by his daughter Lindsay and son-in-law Lenny Jankowski, along with many of the Wyoming Area football coaches, where Pace coached kickers and punters, a job he held on the 1971 Warrior football squad himself.

The GoFundMe page called Lungs for Life raised over $28,000 much needed money for his aftercare post surgery. According to Pace, with outside donations, approximately $30,000 was donated to him, which he said he would forever be grateful for the money contributed.

Pace’s lung capacity was down to 19% and dropping fast in April of this year. He told his wife on the last Friday in April, it was time to call the Johns Hopkins.

“I couldn’t even get off the couch to walk a few steps,” Pace said. “It was tough to catch my breath and I told Carol it was time for me to go.”

Once Pace made the call to Hopkins and on that Friday, April 29, 2020, they made the trip to Baltimore.

Within four-days early morning Tuesday, May 3, Pace said a gentleman entered his hospital room announcing the hospital had lungs for him. Before he knew it, he was heading to the operating room.

Nine-hours later, Carol received a call the surgery was over and was a complete success.

“When I got the call and saw it was from the hospital, I got worried because they told us it would be a 12-hour surgery,” Carol recalled. “When the doctor told me the surgery went according to plan, it was perfect, I was relieved.”

After the surgery, it took three weeks to reflate and a week later, he was discharged.

“He had a tracheostomy after surgery and it was only one week before he was discharged before he got off the oxygen,” Carol recalled.

Even though the surgery was perfect, Pace suffered a few setbacks but not enough to nullify the success of the lung surgery.

Today, 4 ½ months post surgery; Pace is walking freely without oxygen canisters to carry. His pulse-oxygen is normal, but he has some restricts such as lifting heavy items; he still needs to be masked in public to protect his lungs from infection and to allow his sternum to heal 100%.

Although Pace has not received clearance to drive, he can be seen occasionally at a Warriors football practice was well as on game night.

Pace and his wife have been back to Hopkins frequently since the surgery for follow-ups and a random issue that may come up.

Carol said post surgery is where the GoFundMe money has really helped. The last time Pace had medical issues in 2012, he needed brain surgery and his post surgery care cost him his retirement fund that took years to repay and get back on their financial feet.

“I don’t think people realize the cost of all of this,” Carol said. “Yes we had insurance which pays for a lot of the medical, and that’s great, but I was at Baltimore for 60-days, I didn’t have a car, I had to take Uber, and I was responsible for my own meals, transportation and lodging. If we did not have the GoFundMe money I don’t think I would have been able to stay there until he got released.”

Carol went on to say even with post-op care, he had an apparatus for his wound that cost $14.00 per day. Essentially, Pace had to wear the wound care machine for four-months.

“I only had a short time to live,” Pace said. “I prayed every day and I was grateful I got the lungs when it happened, but I also prayed for the donor. I give thanks to the donor all the time.”

Pace said he’s unaware of the donor or their family but is overwhelmed and grateful.

“It’s been a very humbling experience,” Pace said. “I’m humbled by the support of the Wyoming Area and surrounding communities. I’m humbled by the entire experience at Johns Hopkins. Many times I thought how lucky I am to be given a second chance on life.”
