Born on January 12, 1960, in Paris, France, Wilkins' family moved to the United States when he was a young boy. Wilkins attended the University of Georgia, where he played college basketball for three seasons before declaring for the 1982 NBA Draft. He was selected with the third overall pick by the Utah Jazz but was immediately traded to the Atlanta Hawks. Wilkins quickly made an impact in the NBA, earning the nickname "Human Highlight Film" for his incredible dunks and flashy style of play. Throughout his career with the Hawks, Wilkins became a fan favorite and a symbol of the team.

I was always of the idea that wearing black to a funeral in this country was the socially accepted way to show respect for the departed and their family and have always worn what I felt to be appropriate for the particular occassion. I have not really seen it as a reflection of how I felt, it was more about fitting in with the wishes of those closest to the deceased. Thus to my own darling mother's funeral I simply wore something sober and smart knowing that she would have come back and haunted me if I had gone out and bought something black to wear (which is what I would have had to do). If I was attending a funeral where I knew that the family's wishes were for those attending to wear bright colours, I would do so.

I feel out of place at public events, because everyone is wearing things that look like Ren Faire garb, and I m really more comfortable in a polo shirt and a pair of Dockers. There will always be exceptions to what type of funeral attire and outfit that can be worn to a celebration of life, funeral or other memorial gathering.

His rivalry with Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics was one of the most exciting matchups of the era, with both players providing memorable performances in their head-to-head battles.
