O taro é uma planta de textura herbácea, da mesma família do Caládio (Caladium) e apresenta dupla função: como planta ornamental e de uso alimentício. No Brasil o taro confunde-se muitas vezes com o inhame-verdadeiro ou cará, planta do gênero Dioscorea, que também é muito utilizada na alimentação. O taro apresenta folhas grandes, peltadas, cordiformes, de cores que variam do verde ao roxo escuro, quase preto, de acordo com a cultivar. Ele é uma planta acaule, estolonífera e rizomatosa, com rizoma tuberoso que forma cormos espessos e de casca escamosa, fibrosa e de cor castanha.
O taro é uma das plantas mais antigas cultivadas. Por estes motivos é uma excelente planta palustre no paisagismo de lagos e riachos. Planta essencialmente tropical, o taro não tolera o frio, mas pode ser utilizada protegida, na decoração de ambientes internos bem iluminados e em estufas.
