Zephaniah is a biblical figure mentioned in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. He is referred to as a Medium or Witch and is known as the Witch of Endor. The story of Zephaniah takes place during the time of King Saul, the first king of Israel. In the story, King Saul is preparing for battle against the Philistines but is desperately seeking guidance from God. However, God does not answer Saul through dreams, prophets, or the Urim and Thummim. This leads Saul to seek out the services of a medium, which was forbidden by the law of Moses.
We read this part of the narrative in 1 Samuel 28:7-14. During the night and at first disguised, Saul “swore by the Lord” the witch would suffer no harm for indulging in her illegal practice. It’s ironic and wicked in that, even though God had issued the death penalty for witchcraft, Saul swore in His name.
Saul requested the witch contact Samuel, and she elicited the demonic powers of necromancy Deuteronomy 18 10-11 and summoned an apparition of Samuel. But in describing certain events which involve female necromancers, some Bible commentators have employed a feminine term witch to describe the witch of En-Dor who met with Saul.
This leads Saul to seek out the services of a medium, which was forbidden by the law of Moses. Saul disguises himself and goes to visit the Witch of Endor, who has a reputation for being able to communicate with the dead.
