The duo behind Surf Curse appropriately writes each song under the similar theme of the film they allude to--whether it be an aesthetic theme, or a figurative theme of the song’s meaning.
Heaven Surrounds You is a very reserved album. Its sparse lyrics could be examined as poetry that tells the listener very little, but express so much passion, depth, and vulnerability. However, what makes the album so unique is its outspoken instrumentation, which occasionally delves from its raw acoustic guitar riffs to weary synths that set a very somber but reflective tone over the tracks. Of course, it isn’t somber all the way through; tracks such as “Disco” and “Dead Ringers” are far more expressive and upbeat without sacrificing their complexity.

Love, loss, and self-discovery are the forefront topics among many of the tracks. The opening track, “Maps to the Stars”, sets the tone perfectly with only a single stanza of lyrics, and a lively instrumental performance. Wordier tracks, such as “Midnight Cowboy,” refuse to inform the listeners of the who’s, the what’s, and the where’s. It simply offers an experience over a story, and brilliantly does just that.
The complex and cryptic nature of Heaven Surrounds You makes it an album worth replaying over and over. If not to make some sense of it, then to simply enjoy the beautiful lyricism over thoughtful instrumentation.
