In Loving Memory of Swagger ~ Cleveland Browns First Live Mascot

At the request of Swagger’s family, DeJohn Pet Services will be hosting a memorial service for him at DeJohn Funeral Homes in Willoughby Hills on Saturday, February 22. This event is open to the fans, family and community to celebrate his life.

Swagger, the beloved 145-pound bullmastiff, passed away suddenly while at the vet’s office for a check up due to complications from pneumonia. He was 6 years old. Swagger who joined the Browns as a puppy at the start of the 2014 season, was winning the battle with cancer. On top of regular appearances on Dawg Pound Drive and events in the community, he ran through the tunnel at every home game from 2014 to the midpoint of the 2019 season. Swagger’s son, SJ took over for him in week 10 of the 2019 season and will carry on his legacy into 2020 and beyond.

Swagger was born July 20, 2013 and hailed from FD Farms, a certified member of the American Kennel Club, in Rootstown, Ohio. Fred and Debby McLaughlin, owners of the farm, and their son, Justin, was Swagger’s handler on the field. Justin ran out of the tunnel alongside Swagger and has continued to do so with SJ.

“We are saddened to have lost Cleveland football teams first live mascot. Hosting a memorial service for the community is an opportunity for his family and fans to say goodbye and for our community to gather and remember Swagger,” said Sherri DiPietro, DeJohn Pet Care Specialist. “Pets are a very special part of the family and should be treated as such. We care for a family’s pet with the utmost dignity, respect and compassion by people who are pet parents.”

“While we are very sad to have Swagger leave us, we know he brought much joy to families and children that visited the stadium. A lifelong Cleveland fan myself, we feel fortunate to host this opportunity to join in his celebration of life,” said Ross DeJohn Jr. Chief Executive Officer and Funeral Director. He and his family have been Browns season ticket holders since 1960.

DeJohn Funeral Homes is located at 28890 Chardon Road in Willoughby Hills.

The woman I dealt with lied to me when we consulted. When I came to pick up my cat's ashes they were "out of urns and . they were back ordered". Also the supposed casts of my cat's prints "hadn't set right". Well, thats too bad considering they can't recast her prints now that she's cremated. Overall an expensive experience just to be cheated read more

My ferret passed away on a Friday night. I was distraught and the thought of leaving him in the fridge or freezer over . the weekend was just plain devastating. I called several 24 hour services with no reply. Then Gabriel from De John called me back. The process was amazing from the initial dropping of my dude to the final pick up of his name plate. The fact he called back early on a saturday morning and was there to meet us was so settling. Thank you to all and Gabriel you sir are a true amazing person to deal with. I hope its a long time before I see you again but I will not deal with anybody again in this service. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you read more

Sherry did great but there are multiple flaws with this service. Few hours after my beloved pet passed away I went on . Google and found this place due to great reviews. Some answering lady named Molly picked up and I was sobbing and said I would like to inquire about my pet that just passed away. The clueless lady spoke in a monotone robotic voice, sorry to hear about your father. What was his name? I said excuse me? My PET passed away. In a cold tone, she said oh sorry we don’t do pets. That was one of the most devastating days of my life and some lady have the nerve to say a pet cremation place does not offer service to pets in the most monotone, unemotional tone I’ve ever heard. I reported this to the funeral home and all they say was sorry, this shouldn’t happen again. Ha ha great. I’ve already had a horrible first experience. What is a sorry gonna do? Very nice that they just brushed this incident under the rug as I am sobbing and crying my eyes out. So I’m just some tester for your answering service and auditing the workers you guys hire that don’t even know who they’re working for. A week went by and I signed up for the pet memorial service and they didn’t even say my pets name. Really? I know how to use a computer and signed up my pets name online for a blessing. I can’t with this place. What a joke. Plus the name plate for my pet’s box was all bent. They want me to pay what $30-$50? For a replacement? I’ve already paid $300+ for a private cremation for a 3 pound animal. What a joke and a money grab. They care about money first, pets second and humans last or don’t care about people what’s so ever. Don’t get me wrong, A+ for advertising. F- and you will be taken advantage and treated like a money pit once they see you are vulnerable like I was. And don’t reply back to this comment with some generic response such as “sorry you had a bad experience, please reach us back at 1800-money-grab” aka pay for your pet to go to heaven. They don’t give a damn about you - at least not me. I was crying for 3 days straight over my pet. Money pit money pit guess I didn’t pay enough for my little 3 pound baby for them to give a damn. By the way my pet passed away months ago. I still get sad until this day. When my pet passed they asked them to write them a Google review. Well here you go. This experience did not meet my expectations. All these positive reviews online? Nothing is perfect. Some people have good experiences and some have bad experiences. I had months to think about this and process the loss for my precious pet. And this place just rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t give a damn if I’m going to hell for writing my honest review cuz I’ve already paid for my pet to have a peaceful passing. read more

We recently had to make the sad decision to send our cat Alice over the rainbow bridge. It is important to our family . that are animals are returned to us in a manner that allows us to bring them home so we can continue to love and honor them. I have never met anyone who cares more about this than Sherry at Dejohns pet center. From the moment you walk in you will be met with such warmth and care and dignity. Sherry met us with Alice with soft music, candles and a special bed for her to be laid into. Every aspect of this difficult time was met with such amazing respect and gracefulness by Sherry and DeJohns. it was so comforting to us. This was the fourth time we have used this wonderful service and we cannot say enough about their services, beautiful products that honor our fur babies and most especially Sherri's heart and respect for our time of grief of those magnificent creatures that we were honored to share our lives with. read more

I called DeJohn Pet Services after losing our sweet Evie, our little love, suddenly and unexpectedly when I was out of . town. I was in anguish when I picked up the phone- I could not fathom completing cremation at the vet. To me, it was not befitting of the huge place she had in our lives- she deserved better. Sherri answered the phone. She listened to me cry, validated my experience, and supported me through my grief. She offered to take our Evie and give her the goodbye she deserves. She let me have time with her, to say goodbye in the way that I needed to. She just got it. She understood. In a time where it feels like you’re all alone, I wasn’t. I will never forget the love and support I felt from Sherri and DeJohn. I got to honor Evie and start the path toward acceptance that she is gone. Sherri was conscientious and giving from the start- with her time, her energy, and her compassion. She even made perfect ornaments and imprints, and gave us just enough fur to remember. We cannot thank her enough. If you feel the way I felt, go to Sherri and DeJohn. Your pet will be honored and you will be supported. read more

I had no idea that DeJohn Pet services even existed, until we lost our beloved Louis who passed away in his sleep. Our . regular veterinarian office was closed and the doctor on call suggested them as an alternative. I only wish I knew about Sherri when we had lost our other little Frenchies. The caring and overall love for our little four legged children totally overwhelmed me. I only wish I had found her earlier. We ended up bringing our three little angels together again. I lost Katt earlier this week and Sherri helped me through the grieving process. I first made contact with Sherri a . month ago as Katt had cancer and was seriously thinking of putting her down but I was not sure if I was making the right decision. There is a review that says this is all about money, but Sherri never pressured me and actually gave me advice that made me look at other options for Katt.Weeks later Sherri called to check in and see how everything was doing. Katt was getting treatment but eventually started to get worse again. She stayed on the phone and listened to my fears, concerns and doubts. Make no mistake, of course this is a business but in front of that business is a woman that deeply cares about pets and ensuring you receive the best care possible.Earlier today I was able to finish saying goodbye to Katt and you know what Sherri said to me? If I need anything, to just call her. No strings attached and no pressure. She made such a positive impact on me and I hope she can do the same for you.If you read this and are struggling right now because of a loss or like me anticipating a future loss, please consider just calling Sherri. Maybe she can help you like she helped me. read more

Words cannot express how grateful our family is to Sherri and DeJohn Pet Services. While we experienced the devastating . loss of our beloved Moo, we found ourselves needing a cremation service, and found DeJohn Pet Services online. I was impressed with the level of respect and dignity that was conveyed on their site. I knew immediately after calling and speaking with Sherri that this was the best service that we would find. Sherri is a genuine animal lover, a kind and comforting woman, and she instantly put me at ease, thoughtfully listening to our situation, expressing compassion, and guiding me through the necessary process. Our sweet boy’s remains were handled with dignity and care. Sherri showed such reverence for our beloved Moo that she called to tell us the moment his body arrived at DeJohn. We were able to pick up his ashes the very next day. Once there, we were touched to find that Moo’s ashes were presented to us in a truly respectful manner. Sherri was incredibly comforting, as only one who has known the intense love of a dog could be. While we will be forever broken from our loss, we take comfort in knowing that, after his passing, Moo was handled with the care and dignity that he deserved. Sherri will have our eternal gratitude for giving our family a comforting closure. read more

When our dog, Page, passed away, we were all stricken with grief. It was (and remains) a terrible loss for us, which . is why we are so grateful to have found Sherri at DeJohn. She treated Page like the family member she was. Sherrie was respectful, empathetic, and just truly kind in helping us deal with our loss. She also provided us with so many wonderful ways to remember Page: paw prints, nose prints, hair clippings that look like little angel wings . We are immensely grateful to Sherri for everything. Her love for animals is obvious, and she extended that love to our little dog as well. read more

This was our first time having a pet cremated so we didn't entirely know what to expect. Sherri was there to greet us . with a special place to put our fur baby. She went through the entire process, different packages offered, etc. After meeting with her, we knew we made the right decision, entrusting our beloved family member to someone who would treat him as such. When we picked him up, Sherri had everything set up nicely, consisting of everything that she had promised; hair clippings, paw and nose prints, death certificate and of course our fur baby. I can't tell you enough how impressed we were! Sherri is one of the sweetest, most down to earth people you will ever meet. The world would be a better place if there were more people like her. We couldn't imagine going anywhere else. She is truly a class act and we highly recommend her and DeJohn Pet Services, you won't be disappointed! read more
