The unofficial patch is the main "mod" everyone should download to avoid some crashing bugs that can occur as well as balancing the game better.

Unofficial Patch was de-facto standart for years. Better balance much more content. If you want completelly different game you can try "Brave New World" and "Dwiggs". Maps penty of them on heavengames. There's only uPatch 1.4 on http://aow2.heavengames.com 1.5 Version (installation of 1.4 required) was released in 2016 but I downloaded it from something else. Google should help.
