We could interpret these ecclesiastical witch balls as mere decorative whimsies but Poynter-Adams was told by a parishioner that these reflective objects were in fact witch-watchers intended to ward off witches from the Reserved Sacrament. Not to be confused with the witch balls comprised of hair and wax which were supposedly thrown or shot by witches at their victims in the United States.

When three young witches, Electra, Cassandra, and Medea, decided to practice witchcraft, they had no idea what consequences the wrong spell would have. Specters that lurk in the town, a ghost house in the middle of the dark forest, and an old witch with an eerie wail are their minor problems.
Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Eric O’Brian is sent to live in a small town named Hollow as a punishment for his constant truancy and bad behavior. Shortly he finds out that the beautiful town full of colorful ravines, green highlands, and dense forests is not an ordinary one: flowers that whisper, a strange Old Curiosity Shop that steals the time, and a hanged man coming to life on the Halloween night lead him to believe that Hollow is a mystical place inhabited by witches.
After meeting the mysterious red-haired girls and befriending them, Eric becomes a part of the world with time travels, medieval bards, flying brooms, and paintings with parallel reality.
Then a murder happens in Hollow.
Witch Hollow and the Fountain Riddle
When Eric learns that the weather in Hollow has been acting strangely, he returns to the magical town to help his friends with the danger they might face soon. Eric reads an old diary and learns gruesome details about the witch-hunt which may happen again.
Eric and his friends have to understand what is wrong with the weather and why the boys are getting paler day by day. Could the truth be hidden in the dark depths of the cave? And what is hidden inside the Fountain on the square?
To solve the Fountain Riddle Eric and his friends will have to fight the Pied Piper and his rats, visit a 19th century ball, and catch the boy in the painting.
Another witch ball was used by Madam Montague Lawrence, who was fined £10 for ‘professing to tell fortunes’, in 1943. Her premises in Sloane Square, Chelsea, were decked out with two crystal balls which she handled during consultations, and what witnesses described as a ‘silver bowl’ on a wooden stand. In an attempt to avoid a guilty verdict, Lawrence claimed that her crystals were only ‘paperweights’ and the large silver object only a ‘witch ball’ – probably a ‘garden globe’ or kugel brought inside to act as a witch ball. [20] According to another piece of folklore witch balls could be of use to the fortune-teller – if the witch ball dims, or becomes cloudy or opaque, it predicted a death. [21]

Some wield the ability to control the elements, summoning storms and unleashing torrents of lightning upon intruders. Others excel in necromancy, raising the dead to serve their wicked purposes. Beware, for these dark enchantresses are capable of trickery and deception beyond mortal comprehension. The malevolent magic of Witch Hollow extends beyond the witches themselves. The very landscape seems to conspire against trespassers, twisting and distorting reality. One moment, a path may lead to safety, and the next, it may vanish entirely, leaving travelers lost and vulnerable to the spells of the witches. The trees themselves whisper secrets and warnings, their branches reaching out like skeletal hands to ensnare unsuspecting victims. Those unfortunate enough to fall victim to the malevolent magic of Witch Hollow often find themselves trapped in a never-ending nightmare. Time loses all meaning, and sanity hangs by a fragile thread. Shadows dance in the corners of vision, and whispers echo through the mind, driving intruders to the brink of madness.
