Author Jill Murphy’s first several books in the series came out while I was learning to read, so I’ve been a fan of Mildred and her magical shenanigans for essentially my entire life. Her books set the tone for everything I look for in a witchy story.
Some believed that she was on a mission to sow chaos and disorder in the world. Others speculated that she was simply a powerful and unpredictable being, unaware of the consequences her magic had on the world around her. Efforts to apprehend the Disastrous Witch proved futile. It seemed as though she could evade capture at will, disappearing without a trace whenever authorities got close. The witch seemed to possess an uncanny ability to blend in with her surroundings, making it nearly impossible for anyone to track her down. As the year came to an end, so did the reign of the Disastrous Witch. Just as mysteriously as she had arrived, the witch vanished, leaving behind a wake of destruction and questions. The communities affected by her magic were left to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives. While the true identity and motives of the Disastrous Witch may forever remain a mystery, her legacy still lives on. Her story has become a cautionary tale, reminding the world of the dangers that can arise from unchecked and destructive magic.
