So how did Harvey Mudd (established in 1955) become the STEM mascot of the group? Credit goes to the man the school is named after, a mining engineer turned magnate who had a prescient understanding—just as the Space Age was beginning to dawn—of the growing need for rigorous technological and scientific education. Already a donor to the Claremont Colleges, Mudd began working to add a school devoted to these studies but died before the project's completion—his family took over and named the institution after him.
Its emphasis on STEM education sets it apart from other liberal arts colleges, and on the flip side, its liberal arts designation sets it apart from other STEM institutions, IvyWise s consultants say. This interdisciplinary approach is meant to prepare students not only for successful careers in their chosen fields, but also for a lifetime of critical thinking and problem-solving.
This fear was fueled by religious leaders who saw the existence of witches as a threat to their power and authority. The witch hunters, often motivated by personal gain or a desire for control, would initiate investigations into alleged witchcraft. These investigations were often biased and based on flimsy evidence, such as rumors or hearsay.
Companion & Comrade: Harvey the Mascot of the 104th Ohio Infantry
Harvey, beloved mascot of the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was a veteran by the time of the Battle of Franklin. When Harvey’s owner Daniel Stearns joined the Federal Army in 1862, Harvey came along. Both dog and master served during the Virginia Pennisular campaign and by the end of 1862, Daniel Stearns had been promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. During this time, Harvey is said to have worn a collar which stated: “I am Lieutenant D.M. Stearns’ dog; whose dog are you?” By 1863, Stearns and Harvey had fulfilled their enlistment, but they rejoined the army, this time in the 104th Ohio. Stearns served as the First Sergeant for the newly formed regiment and the men quickly grew to know his companion. Harvey was not the only pet in the regiment during this time. There were known to have been several dogs, and at least two squirrels, and raccoons.
“The Barking Dog Regiment,” as the 104th Ohio was sometimes called, was active in the Atlanta campaign and it was there, near Kennesaw Mountain, where Harvey was wounded. He ultimately rejoined his comrades and made a full recovery. As the Federal troops moved into Tennessee, the 104th Ohio found themselves in a precarious position. On the edge of Franklin, the regiment was positioned just to the south of a sizable cotton gin. On the afternoon of November 30, Adam Weaver of Co. I, wrote “The regiment’s mascot, old dog Harvey, just paid us a visit. He somehow always looks me up. After a little bite and a hand pat too, moves on to Company ‘F’ boys.” Despite their position, both Stearns and Harvey survived the Battle of Franklin.
The pair moved with the army north to Nashville where Stearns suffered a debilitating injury during the battle. It is unclear what happened to Harvey after his owner was injured at the Battle of Nashville. Despite many years of research, the final chapters of Harvey’s story remain a mystery. Harvey’s owner, Daniel Stearns, survived the war with the serious injury he sustained at Nashville, but was never the same again. He passed away in an insane asylum in 1890.
Harvey’s collar was found with Stearns’ personal effects in the 1990s and has been generously loaned to the BOFT by Mark Weldon.

They would be stripped, shaved, and subjected to "witch tests" such as being thrown into bodies of water. Torture was often employed to force confessions, leading to the accused ultimately confessing to crimes they had not committed. These confessions were then used as evidence to convict and execute the accused. The witch hunts left a trail of devastation in their wake. Innocent lives were lost, families torn apart, and communities shattered. However, it was not just the accused who suffered; the society as a whole experienced a deep moral and psychological trauma. Trust eroded, neighbors turned against each other, and fear became the driving force behind interpersonal relationships. The sinister parade of the witch hunters serves as a haunting reminder of the dangers of unchecked power, fear, and prejudice. It stands as a stark example of how ignorance and irrationality can lead to unspeakable acts of cruelty. Today, it serves as a cautionary tale to never repeat the mistakes of the past and to always question the motives and actions of those in positions of authority..
