soft magic is a poetry collection by Malawian storyteller Upile Chisala. It discusses a range of topics from the self, love, joy, blackness, and survival. The poems are short, sweet, and utterly quotable. They hit you with a quick punch right to the heart before receding into the empty space of the page. It’s a quick, but beautiful must read for everyone.
I want to start off by saying that I don’t read a lot of poetry. I really enjoyed this collection, though, for the sense of support that it was giving people on a range of topics. At the foreground this is a collection supporting women, even more specifically black women. However, the poems in the collection are relatable to just about everyone.
The parts of this collection that spoke to me the most were those touching on depression and joy creation. It was like the book was speaking directly to me at times:
If you got out of bed today and chose to face the
world, I’m proud of you.
If you’re still struggling to, I’m rooting for you.
If no one has called you brave lately, I will.
You are fighting sadness with everything you’ve
got and for that you are mighty.
I’m planning on reading it again too and savoring it. If you are suffering from depression, confidence or self-love or even bad love issues, this little collection of poems may help you out or at least make you smile.
