The Neo Pagan pentacle is a symbol that holds significant meaning within the Neo Pagan community. The pentacle itself is a five-pointed star enclosed in a circle. Historically, medieval Christianity did involve some amount of occultism and witchcraft, especially in medicine. Medical treatments were routinely some mixture of medicinal, religious, and occult elements. For example, you could be told to eat some herb, recite the Lord's prayer so many times, and bury some animal product with occult properties under your doorstep. Magical texts could also easily cross the line from religion to the occult, for example by compelling God or Jesus to cure an illness, rather than simply praying for it.
This was somewhat ironic since colonial regimes, unlike their missionary predecessors, did not believe in witchcraft and made accusations of witchcraft illegal in most of sub-Saharan Africa which has been largely reversed by their successor regimes. It suggests that he is not necessarily well informed or even terribly concerned about what is going on the people have gathered to see an Experiment or two ; It seems that the accused are charged with witchcraft.
It is also believed to offer protection and ward off negative energy. The circle surrounding the star represents unity, wholeness, and infinity. In the Neo Pagan community, the pentacle is often worn as jewelry or used as an altar tool.
