Album Review | Nas – Magic 2

This album was released on July 21st this year. After I heard King’s Disease 3, which was my second favorite album of last year, I decided that Nas is the greatest rapper of all time. As I said in my review of Anwar HighSign‘s latest project, I don’t think you have to have the best discography to be the GOAT. You just have to have legendary career highlights and accomplishments. So, needless to say, I was pretty dang excited when I saw Nas tease this album on IG. Once we got the official announcement the following day, I was even more ecstatic. A growing sentiment I’ve seen from Nas fans is that they like the Hit-Boy stuff, but they want him to work with different producers again. Personally, I’m good on that. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he dropped a new album with different producers and it ended up being fire. However, I see no reason to stop working with Hit-Boy because he’s providing everything that’s needed. I don’t care whose name is attached as long as the shit is dope, and thankfully Hit-Boy hasn’t really missed with these records. I’m not really into him as a rapper, but I honestly think he’s one of the best when it comes to mainstream producers that don’t really work with underground dudes. Some people think his production is too clean and polished, which is something I can understand. I just don’t feel that way personally. Anyway, I really enjoyed the first Magic album, but I didn’t think it was a huge leap in quality from the KD records like a lot of Nas fans made it out to be. It’s still a special album though. I was excited for this new one because Magic was the only Nas album aside from Illmatic where I liked every single song. With this new one, I wasn’t sure if I would feel the same way, but I was excited no matter what.

The album starts with an Intro featuring what sounds like audio from an interview with Archbishop Don Magic Juan, who’s a famous human trafficker. I don’t really care about that dude or anything he has to say, so I didn’t get much out of it. However, I enjoyed the production in the background a lot. I don’t mind this intro at all. I think it’s pretty good. The first actual song is called Abracadabra, and it was my favorite track on my first listen of the album. This shit blew me away the first time I heard it. I think the production here is amazing. It kinda reminds me of Travis Scott’s Don’t Play. I think this beat is better though. I really love Nas’ flow on the first verse, and that line where he was like “what generation don’t listen to Nas?” was fire to me. I think the whole “30 Summers” thing is like the hardest flex ever. The hook on this track is pretty hard. He basically says that he just raps as a hobby now, and I think you can tell he’s having a lot of fun recording music these days. On the one hand, it’s nice to have fun, lighthearted music. However, I don’t think it results in music that is as personal as the content on God’s Son or as meaningful as the lyrical content of Untitled, so it doesn’t stick with me as easily. That’s not to say that music has to be deep to be memorable—just look at VEGA. for example. I will say that the “magic” theme of this album is pretty cool, but I think he could’ve gone deeper with it. Anyway, the second verse is definitely my favorite part of this song. The additional piano keys that come in sound otherworldly, and Nas’ performance over it is fantastic.

I guess the “magic trick” here is that he’s juggling two different album series at the same time. That’s kinda fire, I’m not gonna lie. That’s such a cool flex. I love it. It’s also nice that we got confirmation of King’s Disease 4 here. I’m definitely looking forward to that. Anyway, I think this song is pretty amazing, and it’s definitely one of my favorite tracks of the year. It’s followed by Office Hours, which features 50 Cent. For some reason, this was one of the general public’s most anticipated tracks on the album. I don’t know why people expected 50 to do anything notable here. What has he done lately that led y’all to believe he would be dope on this track? I saw a lot of people complaining that he only spit 12 bars on this song. Let me make one thing absolutely clear; the problem is not that he only spit 12 bars. The problem is that the bars themselves weren’t fucking good. He didn’t have a single good line, and his flow was ass. However, I don’t think his verse was nearly bad enough to ruin the song. It definitely tarnishes it, but I still like the track a lot overall. Nas’ performance here is stellar, and same goes for the production. Nas’ flow is fire, especially on the hook and first part of the first verse.

After that closing line about “two series at once,” Nas says, “If I really gotta dumb it down for some of y’all, that’s that Magic & KD at the same time.” It’s probably obvious to most people, but when Nas says he’s “dumbing it down,” the “it” is the closing line of the verse. I don’t know why, but I saw some people acting like Nas was claiming to have dumbed down his music for the Magic & KD series, as if he would ever admit to something like that. Anyway, I think the song’s really dope overall. Yes, the 50 Cent verse brought things down, but the performances from Nas and Hit-Boy keep things entertaining. The following track is called Black Magic, and it’s one of the weaker songs on the album to me. I still like it though. The beat is just a bit uninteresting to me. It’s definitely not bad at all. It just doesn’t stand out much to me personally. Thankfully Nas’ performance over it is pretty nice. It’s mainly his flow and delivery that makes this song worth returning to for me. He sounds really good here. The first verse is dope.

The hook is kinda boring to me. I like the rapping though. It’s a good song, but, as I said before, definitely one of the weakest songs on the album to me. It’s followed by Motion, which is easily one of the best songs on the album.

The kind of gritty, fast-paced production fits Nas perfectly, and he snapped over it. This might be the best song on the album based purely off the rapping. Nas’ aggression here actually kinda reminded me of his performance on Life Is Good. He killed this shit.

The first verse is awesome, but the second verse is even better to me. His aggressive flow and delivery sound so fucking good.

The hook is pretty good too. There’s really nothing about this track that I don’t like. The production is great. The song’s dope as fuck. It’s followed by another highlight for me called Bokeem Woodbine. This song might actually have my favorite beat on the album to be honest. I love this instrumental. It sounds kind of sad to me. I feel like this is what would play in my head as I’m laying in my deathbed, thinking about all the mistakes I’ve made in my life. The hook on this song is really good.

The one thing that would’ve made this song perfect to me is a second verse from Nas. I also think some more personal content would’ve fit this instrumental better. This shit is still dope as hell though. Track 7 is called Earvin Magic Johnson, and it’s the weakest song on the album in my opinion. I think the beat kinda sucks. It’s just really repetitive, and the primary loop isn’t very entertaining to me. The first verse is pretty good thankfully.

The second verse is better in my opinion though. I don’t know… I don’t think this song is bad, but it’s just very underwhelming, mainly because the production is so lackluster. It’s an okay track overall. It’s followed by What This All Really Means, which is one of the better songs on the album in my opinion. The beat is pretty good, but it’s mainly the performance from Nas that makes this song so entertaining. His intricate flow sounds fantastic here.

I sadly don’t like the way the beat switches up for the hook. However, aside from that I don’t have any complaints with this track. The second verse is arguably even better than the first.

I definitely was more enthusiastic about this song on my first listen of the album, but I still really like it. I think it’s dope. Track 9 is called Slow It Down. The beat on this song kinda reminds me of The Game’s Magnus Carlsen. I think it’s a pretty solid instrumental, but far from my favorite. Once again, it’s really the rapping that makes this song so good. Nas’ flow and delivery are excellent here.

The hook isn’t really anything special, but it serves its purpose well enough. The two verses are the best part of this track. The outro is solid too. I think the song’s dope. The penultimate track is called Pistols on Your Album Cover, and it’s easily one of the best songs on the album to me. I actually love the instrumental on this song, and, to me, each verse is better than the last. The first verse was nice, but the second one is even better.

The closing verse is my favorite part of the song though. I think this shit ends perfectly. The last couplet is really great.

I also like how he rhymed “symposium” with “my bros and ’em.” That was ill. This shit is dope as fuck. It’s technically the last song on the main part of the album, but then we get a bonus track. It’s called One Mic, One Gun, and it features 21 Savage.

I heard this song when it was originally released around the time that 21 Savage was in hot water for saying Nas isn’t relevant. It’s a cool track. I like it. I mean, it’s nothing special, but I enjoyed it to some extent. However, if someone told me it was some midpack I would understand why they have that opinion. Nothing about this song really stands out that much. Everything here is just pretty solid. I definitely like the celebratory production, and I actually really enjoy the part of the hook where Nas is like, “Look at me now.” It’s pretty catchy to me. I’m not really a fan of 21 Savage, but I think his verse here was better than that of Nas. I really wasn’t expecting that because his performance on the intro was really underwhelming. He sounds like he put more effort into his verse than Nas did though.

Overall, it’s a pretty solid track. Will I be returning to it? I don’t know. Probably not to be honest. I don’t mind it being here though, especially since it’s just a bonus track. I’d take this over the bonus track that was on KD3.

This album is great. I don’t think there’s a single bad song here. There are a couple that I won’t be returning to, but even those ones are decent. Nas is still sharp on the mic, and I enjoyed the production for the most part. Again, I don’t mind Hit-Boy’s work here. Are there producers that I’d rather see Nas working with? Sure. I’d love a Salaam Remi or Large Professor collab. However, if Hit-Boy’s who Nas feels inspired by then I don’t see any reason to switch things up now. I like this album about as much as the first Magic album. I’m definitely expecting KD4 to be better than this, but I’m certainly satisfied with this album as an entry in the Magic series. The only moment on this album that stood out as being bad was the 50 Cent verse, but I wasn’t expecting that to be good in the first place. I fuck with this album. If Magic 2 reveals that Nas can definitely still rap, it also continues his unfortunate run of uninspiring production choices. There are enjoyable moments, like the 50 Cent assisted “Office Hours”, the ominous string driven force of “Motion”, and the mesmerizing penmanship on “Slow It Down”, but overall the album falls short for an artist of Nas’s stature. Mid as usual. Just an average album while we wait for KD4. It has some good songs but, overall, not good enough in my opinion.
