The talismanic pub
The Talisman in Park Gate, Southampton, has temporarily closed its doors to undergo a major refurbishment totalling over £1.2million.
The pub has been part of the Hall & Woodhouse (H&W) family since 1983 and sits at the heart of the local community.
Mark James, Property Director at Hall & Woodhouse, said: “We know the Talisman is a much-loved pub, that is popular with locals who enjoy meeting over a pint or a meal with their family. We want the pub to continue serving the community and be a place that our guests choose to visit for many years to come.
“Our aim is to enhance The Talisman by creating a warm and welcoming space that offers great food, drink, and hospitality, from breakfast to bedtime.”
Work began earlier this week to upgrade and carry out a full redecoration to both the internal and external areas of the pub. Guests will soon benefit from the creation of a ‘pantry’ space which is a relaxed dining area where people can meet for everything from fantastic coffee and cakes, through to wonderful pub food and drink. The space will connect to a new landscaped urban garden which will feature a wood burner and extensive outdoor seating, alongside covered areas.
Additionally, there will be an upgraded dining area and a fully refurbished bar area with cosy nooks and crannies, and comfy upholstery to encourage guests to feel at home.
The toilets will be relocated to the first floor to open up the trading area, and throughout the pub, emphasis will be put on bright and airy spaces, with the installation of various skylights.
A nod to Hall & Woodhouse’s 244-year history and the pub’s heritage within the local area will be incorporated in the internal decorations. There will be plenty of quirky features to delight guests’ eyes and discover over repeat visits.
Behind the scenes, upgrades to the kitchen, cellar and team accommodation will also be carried out as part of these works.
Work on The Talisman is due to be completed in February 2022. During its temporary closure, guests are encouraged to visit The Talisman’s sister pub, The Plough Inn Bursledon, which is located just 10 minutes away (www.ploughbursledon.co.uk).

1. Jennifer - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the Midnight Magic Tarot deck. The artwork looked beautiful in the pictures, but in person, it just fell flat. The quality of the cards was not great either, they felt flimsy and cheap. Additionally, the guidebook that came with it was not very helpful in interpreting the cards. Overall, I found the whole experience with this deck to be underwhelming and not worth the price.
2. Mark - 1 star - I have used several tarot decks before, but the Midnight Magic Tarot was by far the worst. The illustrations were dark, muddy, and lacked clarity, making it difficult to connect with the cards and their meanings. The cardstock was thin and easily bent, making it feel very cheap. I was also disappointed with the lack of variety in the deck, as many of the cards looked similar. Overall, I would not recommend this tarot deck to anyone serious about divination.
3. Sarah - 3 stars - As someone who has been practicing tarot for a few years now, I found the Midnight Magic Tarot to be quite average. The artwork was decent, but it didn't have the wow factor that I was hoping for. The guidebook was somewhat helpful, but I felt that it could have provided more in-depth interpretations and explanations. The quality of the cards was satisfactory, but not outstanding. Overall, it is an okay deck for beginners or as a backup deck, but there are definitely better options out there.
