This book and activity are just too great not to share! I actually did this with my sixth graders a while back (right before Thanksgiving!) but am just getting around to writing about it. Many of you have probably already read or heard about the hilarious book, The Math Curse, by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. These are the same authors as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. If you haven't read Math Curse, it is definitely worth finding a copy and reading with your students. It will get them thinking, laughing, and learning about some fun math concepts!

In addition to reading the book, the last few years I have made it into a challenge for my middle schoolers. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of reading it yet, the main character falls victim to a math curse, resulting in everything turning into a math problem! The questions are engaging, wacky, and math related (well. some of them). I decided to put together a worksheet with many of the questions from the book. After reading the book with my students, I let them work individually or with a partner to answer as many of these questions correctly. I give out a small prize to the group in each class that gets the most correct! Click on the picture or link to get a free copy of the worksheet!

This is a great activity if your students just need a break from the normal routine. I usually do this on a day just before a break each year, when a lot of the students are already checked out (or on vacation!). I hope all you math nerds enjoy! And if you're a science person. be sure to check out the Science Curse!

Reviews for "Enhance Your Problem-Solving Skills with The Math Curse Book PDF"

1. John - 2 stars - I really did not enjoy reading the "Math curse book pdf." The concept of a math curse seemed interesting at first, but it quickly turned into a confusing and overwhelming experience. The book was filled with complicated math equations and concepts that were difficult to understand for someone like me who is not particularly strong in math. I found myself constantly flipping back and forth trying to grasp the concepts, and it took away from the flow of the story. Overall, I felt like the book was more focused on teaching math rather than telling an engaging story.
2. Emily - 1 star - I found the "Math curse book pdf" to be incredibly boring and dry. The illustrations were uninspiring, and the plot lacked any excitement. While I appreciate the attempt to incorporate math into a children's book, it felt forced and did not engage the reader. The explanations of different math concepts were overly complex and hard to follow. It felt more like I was reading a math textbook rather than a children's story. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining and enjoyable read.
3. Sarah - 2 stars - As someone who struggles with math, I was hoping that the "Math curse book pdf" would present an interesting and fun way to learn. However, I was disappointed in the execution. The book seemed to assume a certain level of math knowledge, making it difficult to understand for someone like me who is not mathematically inclined. Additionally, the story itself was not engaging and lacked depth. I found myself losing interest quickly and ultimately struggled to finish the book. I would not recommend it to others, especially those who are not confident in their math abilities.
4. Michael - 3 stars - While the "Math curse book pdf" had good intentions, I found it to be a bit too overwhelming. The abundance of math equations on each page made it difficult to follow the story. I think the concept of a math curse is interesting, and it could have been a fun way to learn, but the execution fell short. The book lacked simplicity and clarity, making it inaccessible to readers who may not have a strong background in math. I would recommend it for those who are confident in their math skills and enjoy a challenge, but for the general reader, it may be too much to handle.
