Nintendo has fallen into the same trap with the Vitality Sensor for some reason, with this piece of hardware we have Shigeru Miyamoto speaking in generalities instead of showing us the hidden magic with a ready-to-go tech demo. During an invitation-only question and answer session at E3, Miyamoto discussed the Vitality Sensor in very vague terms, saying that he has ideas about how to use it, including its inclusion in a new Pokemon title.

These crystals are carefully calibrated and embedded within the detector, allowing them to detect even the faintest traces of magical vitality. When activated, the sensors within the device collect and analyze the energy signals emitted by the surrounding environment. These signals are then converted into readable data and displayed on the unit's screen.

Goal: To determine whether or not magical item treasure needs to be added to the loot found by a party going through this campaign book.

That's how I see it: A character can use Detect Magic to figure out exactly what a potion will do. Would you allow this in the campaign you run? Would you let players use this spell to identify other magic items as well? I think I might.
