Hay Lin's Magical Art Skills in W.I.T.C.H.

By admin

Hay Lin is one of the main characters in the Italian comic book series "W.I.T.C.H." She is a teenage girl with Chinese ancestry who possesses the power of Air.

The Star of Threbe: Hay Lin as well as the rest of the Guardians was rendered powerless due to the power of the Star of Threbe, used to find Elyon. The star renders powerless anyone who might prevent her from returning home. Ironically the star was created with the Heart of Kandrakar. [11]

In the New Power arc, Eric is given a passing mention but later, Hay Lin is said to have not yet fallen in love, effectively writing Eric out of her past. Also in the TV show, she was capable of empathic precognition; if she s thinking strongly of someone before she sleeps, she can see what will happen to them in the future, like she did with Elyon before her coronation.

Hay Lin

Hay Lin (Irma likes to great her with "Hey Hay") Even though Lin is her last name, everyone trends to call her Hay Lin, instead of just Hay.

Age:
She's 13 when the comics start and was born June 4th.

Family:

Hay Lin's family owns the Silver Dragon, a Chinese restaurant in down town Heatherfield. Joan Lin is a practical woman with grace and a collection of Chinese stories that she likes to tell Hay Lin. She loves surprises! Her birth name is Joan Chou (or Chou Joan how it would be said in Asia) and she grew up in a big estate in Hong Kong with tight schedules and servants (issue #93). She met Chen Lin in her late teen years. He was a hired servant to Joan and her friends. Joan had a dog as well, called Troopy. The two teens fell in love despite their different social standings and Joan left her home in order to marry Chen. She was disinherited and every year a man with divorce papers comes to the Lins to try and get Joan back to the Chou family until they resolve the matter in issue 93 once and for all.

Hay Lin's grandfather Khan Chou is a rich merchant who is strict and traditional in his ways. As the head of the family and several servants, he is used to command and his orders being followed. But he loves his daughter dearly and wants what's best for her and to keep her close and safe. He sees much of Joan in Hay Lin.

As for Joan's mother, she is only shown briefly in issue 93 and is not with the older Mr. Chou later in the issue. It is unclear if she has passed away or if she maybe just wasn't in that part of the estate when the Lin's visited. In issue 110 she is seen again in a memory of Joan bringing an expensive and special gift for her daughter's birthday. Mrs. Chou always appears elegant and almost perfect in her demeanour. A kind smile but calm and correct. Not big laughs or gestures.

There are few other members mentioned of the Chou family. In issue 110 Joan speaks of an aunt Long who embroidered a towel and a fan that belonged to Hay Lin's great grandmother.

Chen Lin is a bit clumsy but has a big heart and smiles and laughs a lot. After the time of servitude at the Chou's estate, he seems happy to be free and with his love Joan. He is one of two cooks in the restaurant and creates dishes for the customers. He is no good as a waiter, however since he cannot remember the orders of each table. In issue 108 Hay Lin says that he likes to get funny ideas or into certain "manias" that change constantly. If he has the idea of living healthy, he changes the food even for his customers which can cause problems for the restaurants reputation. Or he changes the colors of the interior without telling anyone before hand, or takes away all decorations because it feels cleaner that way. These manias usually don't last long but still Hay and Joan have a rough time "fixing" Chen's ideas. His biggest hobby however is ornithology - the watching of birds. He and Hay Lin like to sneak out occasionally to drive out during dawn and watch birds by a pond. Neither Joan, nor Chen know anything of magic.

Her grandmother on her (father's side) Yan Lin is a lovely and funny old lady who was a guardian once herself and was entrusted with the Heart of Kandrakar after the former Keeper died. It was her that told the girls about their powers and tasks as guardians and she also presented the Heart to Will. Early in Arc 1 she dies and is accepted to Kandrakar where she resides as one of the wisemen. Much later in issue 38 after Himerish's banishment, Yan Lin becomes candidate for Oracle against Endarno but looses the election. In issue 49 she becomes part of the Triumvirat or Trinity Empire and in issue 86 finally receives the title of Oracle. On a more personal note, it is indicated that Yan Lin was around when Joan was still a young child to tell her stories (issue #9). This could mean that she, too was part of the Chou household. She and Hay Lin have a special and close bond.

The Lin family in general is said to have lived in Heatherfield for a long time and so the restaurant, which is run by the family, is located in the historic district down town (see special information about the Lin family). Another bit of information is found in the room sheet of Hay Lin. The painting on the wall was made by her great-great grandfather and shows a traditional Chinese landscape. It is said that there were two artists and one poet in the Lin family and in order to honour the artistic root of the family, Hay Lin has decided to become an artist herself.
