It refers to a mysterious and unexplained event where hundreds of people in the city suddenly develop an uncontrollable urge to smile. This phenomenon is not limited to a certain age group or gender, as both children and adults have reported experiencing this strange occurrence. Witnesses of the Grin spell have described feeling an intense wave of happiness and joy before the smiling begins. Papi Gator picked me up from the airport around 4:30 PM in McAllen, Texas. The sun was on its way to blistering and the traffic crossing the Rio Grande had slowed to a crawl. Looking out my window, I saw trees and plastic bags pushing through the border fence, as if to close a yawning gap.

I can always tell we re getting close to the orphanage because there s a convenience shop with a coke sign and an ice cream freezer tucked into the corner like good news. The city has long had a large population of Mexican descent; segregation and a transformation from a ranching economy Mexican dominated to a farming economy dominated by white settlers raised tensions in the city.

Welcome to Big Heart

Papi Gator picked me up from the airport around 4:30 PM in McAllen, Texas. The sun was on its way to blistering and the traffic crossing the Rio Grande had slowed to a crawl. Looking out my window, I saw trees and plastic bags pushing through the border fence, as if to close a yawning gap.

Texas transforms into Mexico in the blink of an eye. You have no warning but the man checking your passport and nodding at Papi Gator because he sees him at least twice a day. As we rolled into Reynosa, I looked around at the railroads, the potholes, and the pastel buildings that usually symbolize a new country. Getting to the orphanage requires a few twists, a u-turn, and a lot of pothole-evasion. While he drove, Papi Gator told me stories of the men he’s made friends with here in Reynosa, most of whom own large guns and cause trouble. But that’s just like Gator: he knows no stranger and offers love freely and generously, even to the worst of us.

As we looped around the small town, I saw small coke shops and taco stands, emaciated dogs following colorfully clad children, and even caught a glimpse of a man wearing a rooster on the top of his head.

I can always tell we’re getting close to the orphanage because there’s a convenience shop with a coke sign and an ice cream freezer tucked into the corner like good news. Three hundred yards from the convenience shop sits the red wall that reads my favorite words, “Big Heart Orphanage”

We crossed a metal gate, pulled into the driveway, and right away I saw a handful of kids lounging, grinning, playing, and talking fast under an old Ficus tree that sits in the middle of the property. The giant Ficus is the shady refuge for the kids as the temperatures creep into triple digits. It’s olive and sage leaves are a chorus of sounds, chirps, and rustling. Some kids eyed me suspiciously, some remembered me, and most smiled and offered me their toys and sticky hands.

There’s something about Big Heart Orphanage. It’s built on a calling, sustained by faith, and to the brim with joyful, wild children. If you ask me, I think the blood, sweat, and tears of Jesus-followers occupy most of the space here at Big Heart Orphanage. Hundreds of people have come here to build, cook, serve, and play. More so, they’ve all come called by Love and ready to pour out compassion. It’s an amazing place, and I’m thrilled to introduce you to it.
