Reno, Nevada…not typically a place thought of as a hub for water-sports. And maybe that’s the point; between the desert flora and the arid atmosphere, it’s almost as if someone laid a pox on “The Biggest Little City in the World” for aquatic fanatics. A Surf Curse, if you will. For nearly a full decade, Surf Curse has been tearing up waves of indie rock, pop, punk, and psych. Developmentally, the once-duo has recently doubled into a quartet, expanding their coast of cross-genre grains and performance capabilities. Those new additions have culminated in Surf Curse’s fourth full-length Magic Hour, recorded at the one-and-only Electric Lady Studios. Surf Curse has already caught a steady current of streams for Magic Hour and now, after wrapping up the European leg of their latest tour, they’re bringing the sorcery down to Austin. Surf Curse performs both tonight and tomorrow night (sold out) at The Mohawk, but if it’s just not in the cards for you, fire up the surreal nightmare-fuel within “Self Portrait“‘s music video.

This allows hitters to generate more power and hit the ball further, increasing their chances of getting extra-base hits and home runs. Additionally, this bat is made with durable materials that ensure its longevity. The Easton Black Magic BBCOR college bat features a high-strength alloy barrel that is designed to withstand the rigors of college-level play.

From Scott Storch to Mike Dean, The Alchemist to Murda Beatz, and far too many more examples to list here, it’s clear that having a white producer doesn’t negate the impact of a strong black voice in hip-hop. Here in Austin we can point to Song of the Day favorite RuDi Devino, who’s spread his […]

On this second New Music Friday of 2024, we just gotta give a bow to some Austin pop rock royalty. We’re talkin’ about husband-and-wife songwriter-producers Joy and Bill Baldwin, best known by their collaboration King Air. After securing a legacy in marriage and parenthood, the Baldwins – both veterans of the ’90s local live scene […]

An obvious understatement, but music’s taken some huge leaps in the past century-plus of sound recording. So while the simple lyrical structures and repetitive chord progressions of pioneers like Robert Johnson or Lead Belly may seem laughably basic to some nowadays, that’s only because we’ve become spoiled by one integral element – the groove. In […]

The 1998 flick SLC Punk! entertained audiences with all kinds of counterculture cliques, and in doing so, they also exposed Utah’s more ingrained sociopolitical climate – that of Reagan-era republicans, yuppies, and the Mormon church. Whether or not the movie feels “authentic” to you, it’s not unreasonable to guess there’ve been plenty more who’ve felt […]

Last Fall when we shared our KUTX staff picks for Levitation Fest, I got a chance to gush about one of all-time favorite contemporary projects, Ghost Funk Orchestra. That slick, spectral sound clearly continues to haunt me, because I’ve got yet another chance to gawk at Ghost Funk Orchestra today. For those who haven’t already […]

With Free Week behind us and SXSW still a way’s out, we’re officially filling up our radar with a ton of promising releases for 2024. And that of course includes a wealth of Austin talent. For example, last weekend we got another glimpse at some new material from Austin’s Emily McLoud. An addict for the […]

Nobody starts their night wanting to be that guy at the bar. But on top of the inevitable hangover, sometimes way too many drinks in a few too many places can make for a great story, even if your audience only reacts with schadenfreude. Now, The Pendulum Hearts have always benefitted from a self-deprecating sense […]

Just like a ragtag team of survivors, when you find the perfect pack for your project, playing without them is like taking an axe to the face. So sure, choir singer and solo veteran Nova Barton has strong enough chops to create and command attention all on her own, as heard on her 2021 debut […]

Surf Curse Shares New “Self Portrait” Single and Music Video off Upcoming LP Magic Hour

Surf Curse shares a new song and music video, “ Self Portrait ,” the latest single off the Reno indie rock band’s upcoming LP Magic Hour , out October 7 via Atlantic Records . The track gets the head banging with guitarist Jacob Rubeck ’s driven chords and modulated riffs, while drummer/lead singer Nick Rattigan delivers a hard-hitting rhythm and rousing vocal performance.

The accompanying music video, directed by Rattigan and Nathan Castiel , sets the track within a twisted, Wes Andersonesque winter world, featuring actor Sarah Ritter scaling an ice-cap and becoming tyrannical in a prosthetic, old-man power suit.

Magic Hour, Surf Curse’s fourth LP and Atlantic debut, will feature original members Nick Rattigan and Jason Rubeck in a new arrangement as they welcome new members Noah Kohll (guitar) and Henry Dillon (bass) to the band’s lineup. The changes have worked wonders thus far, as the veteran indie outfit successfully pushes their sound and delivers standout tracks on Magic Hour’s rollout. “Self Portrait” is the latest in a series of standout, sound-expanding singles released this year which will also feature on their album: the punk-inspired “ Lost Honor ,” singalong-jam “ TVI ,” and power pop anthem “ Sugar .” The band’s been riding high since their surprise, Tik-Tok-driven breakout single “ Freaks ” in 2020, which earned over 500M worldwide streams and RIAA platinum certification despite being released in 2013.

The band starts their World Tour on September 17 at Primavera Sound 2022 Los Angeles, which stops in Nashville on December 8-9 at The Basement East, and ends with a grand finale at the infamous Hollywood Palladium on December 17.

Reviews for "Hitting it Out of the Park: The Easton Black Magic BBCOR College Bat"

1. John - 1 star - I purchased the Easton Black Magic BBCOR College Bat based on the hype surrounding it, but I was extremely disappointed with the performance. The bat felt too heavy and unbalanced, making it difficult to generate any power in my swings. Additionally, the grip was not comfortable and kept slipping out of my hands. Overall, I would not recommend this bat for anyone looking for a reliable and high-performing option.
2. Sarah - 2 stars - I had high hopes for the Easton Black Magic BBCOR College Bat, but it did not live up to my expectations. The bat seemed to lack any pop or power, and I found it difficult to make solid contact with the ball. The overall feel of the bat was also quite lacking, as it felt flimsy and cheaply made. I ended up switching to a different bat after only a few uses as I couldn't justify using the Black Magic any longer.
3. Michael - 1 star - I have used many different bats throughout my baseball career, but the Easton Black Magic BBCOR College Bat was by far the worst. The balance was completely off, making it hard to control my swing. The ball also did not come off the bat with any power or distance, making it ineffective during games. I would strongly advise against purchasing this bat if you are serious about your performance on the field.
