The cursed beryl mamba is a legendary creature often mentioned in ancient folklore and mythology. It is believed to be a serpent-like being that possesses a unique characteristic - its skin is said to be made of beryl, a precious gemstone known for its beautiful green color. According to the legends, the cursed beryl mamba was said to reside deep within dense forests and secluded caves. It is often described as a fearsome and venomous creature, with glowing green eyes and sharp fangs. Its beryl skin was said to be incredibly valuable, and many hunters and treasure seekers would venture into the wilderness in search of this rare creature. However, it is said that anyone who managed to capture or kill the cursed beryl mamba would suffer a terrible fate.

However, it is said that anyone who managed to capture or kill the cursed beryl mamba would suffer a terrible fate. The legend tells of curses and misfortunes that would befall them, ranging from never-ending bad luck to the ultimate demise. This curse was believed to be placed upon the creature by ancient spirits or deities, as a way to protect the beryl mamba from human greed and destruction.

I have yet to read a book from the Women’s Prize for Fiction longlist and find myself disappointed. At least, it hasn’t happened yet.
There are some that I’ve enjoyed more than others, yes. And some of the ones that I’ve read have felt long (like 2001’s Ahab’s Wife).
Some have been exhausting (like 2005’s We Need to Talk about Kevin), some have had some very sad bits (like 1999’s Poisonwood Bible).
Some I thought I might fall in love with but we only ended up having a brief fling (like 2000’s White Teeth), and some were incredibly painful to read (like 2008’s The Gathering).
But I’ve never finished a book on this list and felt that it was a waste of precious reading time.
So I plan to test the theory and keep reading. The jury usually announces their longlist in March and their winner in June, so I tend to step up the prizelist reading in between, but the rest of the reading year I just casually pick away at the backlist: in this way, I’ve added a lot of names to my favourite writers list.
