Black Rabbit Rose sits very firmly in that weird era of dark magic and mystery that popped up in the early 1920s. The bar is a world away from the cheesy comedy and tricks we associate with modern magic. Instead, it looks at magic as a place in time, rather than as silly kitsch.

This is especially evident in the decor, but you can see it in the experience of the place too. The bar staff don’t want to ruin the surprise, but they do say that a lot of mysterious things happen in the place as the night goes on. Objects move, cabinets open and close. There’s fire, levitation and secret doors.

They even put on magic shows for the patrons, but they’re like ones you’ve never seen before. The shows draw on the vaudeville themes popular in the early 20th century, with burlesque dancers, contortionists, illusionists and jazz singing.

The bar itself is located in the old building used for MGM and Paramount film production, which used to house old Hollywood star royalty like Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin.
